Portales, N.M. – The A&M-Commerce softball saw its 10-game winning streak come to a close after splitting Saturday's doubleheader with Lone Star Conference foe Eastern New Mexico with the Lions taking the first game 14-6 and the Greyhounds earning the 8-7 win in game two.
Game 1: A&M-Commerce 14, Eastern New Mexico 6Turning PointMonica Cherry hit homer in the top of the sixth, which started a six-run streak in the top of the inning that flipped a 5-3 deficit into a 9-5 lead for the Lions.
Inside the Box ScoreSelena Rima earned the win in relief after five and two-thirds innings in the circle.
Luci Ponce went 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBI thanks to a pair of home runs.
Haley Colwell went 3-for-4 with four RBI including two doubles.
Cherry capped off a stellar performance in game one with her homer. She was 3-for-3 at the dish with two runs scored and four RBI.
Summary1st InningPonce homered for the Lions for first run of the game.
Cherie Jackson followed with a single to center and
Danielle Guerra pinch ran. Sturm followed Ponce and Jackson with a single to shortstop and Colwell doubled sending Guerra and Sturm home cutting the Greyhound lead down to 5-3 after four.
6th InningPonce pounded another home run to lead off the inning. Sturm was hit by pitch and Magen Lunch pinch ran. Colwell doubled to left and Cherry clubbed a ball over the fence for a home run and three RBI giving the Lions thier first lead of the game.
The Lions continued to light up the scoreboard when
Ciera Nunez was hit by pitch then stole second with
Baylea Higgs up to bat. Higgs singled to the pitcher and
Kylene Hatton doubled, sending Nunez home.
Ashleigh Hinshaw worked her way on base with a pinch hit single to bring Higgs into score and completing the six run, sixth inning for the Lions.
7th InningThe inning started with three consecutive singles by Sturm, Colwell and Cherry. After one out Higgs singled getting two RBI when Sturm and Colwell scored. Hatton singled down the right line to score Cherry and Higgs. After
Tyler Oppenheim reached on a fielder's choice, Ponce doubled to right and Oppenheim came home plating the game's final run.
Game 2: A&M-Commerce 7, Eastern New Mexico 8Turning PointWith Lions leading 7-6 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, ENMU took advantage of a Lion error that extended the inning and scored two runs on a triple to take an 8-7 lead.
Inside the Box ScoreCherie Jackson led the Lions with two hits in her four trips to the plate including a double. Cherry and Oppenheim also went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Lions.
Ponce continued her tear through the weekend with her fifth homer of the four-game series. She also drove in three runs taking her weekend RBI total out to 15.
The loss dropped the Lions to 22-6 on the season and 8-4 in the Lone Star Conference. It also snapped the Lions 10-game winning streak. The streak was the longest in the brief history of A&M-Commerce softball.
Summary2nd InningAfter ENMU took a 2-0 lead in the home half of the first, the Lions pushed their first run across the plate when Higgs singled in Cherry.
5th InningTrailing 5-1, the Lion offense got rolling with a six-run inning on six hits. Ponce highlighted the frame with a three bomb to left. Jackson and Sturm each doubled in the inning eventually came around to score. Jackson scored when Colwellsingled to center and Guerra, who pinch ran for Sturm, scored when Colwell reached on an infield single. Hinshaw came through with her second pinch-hit RBI to score Colwell and give the Lions a 7-5 lead.
ENMU cut the lead down to 7-6 with a run in the bottom of the frame.
6th InningThe Greyhounds completed the comeback with two runs in the sixth to earn the 8-7 win.
What's Next?A&M-Commerce returns to the friendly confines of the John Cain Family Softball Field when No. 1 West Texas rolls into Commerce. The Buffs are 27-0 on the season and are coming off of an LSC series sweep of No. 20 Angelo.
