HEAD COACH JASON BURTON
On the Lions' overall performance
I'm really pleased. We've been off for a while and it's easy to get some rust and not come out and play hard here. I think this was the best game we've played in Kingsville since I've been here. It was a close game, but I thought our team played with energy. Our bench was engaged the entire game and people came into the game and stepped up.
On individual performances
How about
Jenna Price coming in as a freshman and getting 16 boards for another double-double. People have gone down to injury and other people have continued to step up. [Arteajah Gay] came out and was engaged the whole game, was aggressive and scored 20 points. The job that
Khala Riley did running this offense, playing the minutes she played, she didn't really turn the ball over, rebounded, and scored 19 points. She's been a great floor general for us all year.
Penina [Faumui] came in and did a great job rebounding. Her energy keeps plays alive and she did a great job. This was the best game she's played this year I thought.
Natalie [Hessong] came in and is shooting the ball really well. She gives us something we haven't had all year. You have to guard her out there, you have to guard her from well beyond the three-point line. The three she hit in the early second half was about three feet behind the line, and it was huge for us because Kingsville had gone on a run and she knocked that three down to stop the bleeding. It's great to have her back.
[
Artaejah Gay] played really well. She's always had that offense. At first she got a shot blocked and then she started facing up, and that is something she added to her game by really concentrating on it over the break. She also did a great job defensively and rebounding the ball.
