No. 13 Lions set program record for wins in sweep over TWU

DENTON– The No. 13 Texas A&M University-Commerce softball team swept Texas Woman's University in two games on Saturday. The Lions won the first game 13-0 and the second game 6-4.
 
The wins bring the Lions to 38-8 on the season, setting a program record for most wins in a single year. They improve to 23-7 in the Lone Star Conference. The Pioneers fall to 25-20 and 13-14 in conference play.
 
The Lions finish tied for third in the LSC standings and will be the third seed in the LSC Tournament. They will face Texas A&M-Kingsville in the first round of the single elimination tournament. The game will be played in San Angelo on Friday at 11 a.m. Should the Lions advance, they would play in the second game of the tournament later in the day at 4 p.m. The LSC Championship game is set for Saturday at 2 p.m.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (Game 1)
- Mariah Jameyson hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning and had two hits for four RBIs, three intentional walks and two runs scored.
- Kayla Kilcrease had two hits and two RBIs and scored three runs. Kinsie Hebler also had two RBIs on two hits. Bri Sims also had two RBIs on one hit.
- Allie Thompson, Vanessa Avina and Cally Pausewang also all had RBIs.
- Hebler, Sims, Avina, Ciera Nunez, Baylea Higgs, Chloe Horn, Precious Thompson and Jodie Hill all scored runs.
- Emily Otto pitched a complete game shutout, striking out three.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1)
Otto had two strikeouts in the first inning as neither team could get a run across. She continued to pitch well throughout. Both teams remained scoreless through the first three innings.
 
The Lions got on the board in the fourth inning. Jameyson was intentionally walked to lead off. Hebler then followed and hit a two-run home run. Kilcrease then reached and came home on a two-run homer from Bri Sims. The Lions led 4-0 after four.
 
The Lions brought two more across in the fifth inning. Jameyson drew another intentional walk. She scored on a two run homer from Kilcrease. The Lions led 6-0 after four.
 
After neither team scored in the sixth, the Lions brought seven runs across in the seventh inning. Chealsea Slider drew a walk. Higgs then had a bunt single. The Pioneers attempted to intentionally walk Jameyson, but the pitch got away and went right over the center of the plate. She took advantage and smashed the pitch over the center field fence to score three. Avina brought in a run on a hit by pitch. Pausewang then pinch hit and scored a run. Thompson also drew a walk to bring a run home. Jameyson came up again and hit a single to bring in the final run of the frame.
 
Otto had a strikeout in the seventh inning and the Lions ran away with the 13-0 win.
 
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (Game 2)
- Vanessa Muro went 3 of 4 with a double and an RBI.
- Ciera Nunez, Baylea Higgs, Monica Cherry and Kinsie Hebler also all had RBIs.
- Higgs, Muro, Kayla Kilcrease, Precious Thompson, Jodie Hill and Chloe Horn all scored runs.
- Katie Dean earned her 13th win of the year, pitching five innings with three strikeouts. Lacie Bullard pitched the final two innings and earned her first save.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2)
Neither team scored in the first two innings of the game. Dean had a strikeout in each of the innings.
 
Muro hit a single in the third inning and was pinch run for by Horn. She advanced to third on a single from Higgs, who stole second base. After Mariah Jameyson was intentionally walked, Hebler hit into a fielder's choice but a poor tag had all runners safe and both Higgs and Horn scored. The Pioneers scored a run in the bottom of the inning and the Lions led 2-1 after three complete.
 
After neither team scored in the fourth, the Pioneers took the lead for the first time in the series in the fifth inning. A fielding error with the bases loaded allowed two runs to score. The Pioneers held a 3-2 lead after five innings.
 
The Lions answered back with four runs in the sixth inning. Kilcrease led off with a walk. Bri Sims singled and was pinch run for by Thompson. Hill then hit a single down the line to load the bases. Muro, Cherry and Nunez all had RBI singles to bring three runs across. Higgs then had a sacrifice fly to bring in a fourth run . TWU scored a run in the bottom of the inning to bring the score to 6-4.
 
After the Lions could not add to their lead, Bullard closed out the game, retiring all three TWU batters in the final inning and the Lions won the game 6-4.
