SAN ANGELO– The Texas A&M University-Commerce softball team walked away from the annual Lone Star Conference softball championship banquet with a plethora of awards.
Mariah Jameyson was named LSC Player of the Year, the first player in program history to receive such an honor.
In addition, Jameyson and
Ciera Nunez were named to the All-Academic team. Nunez was joined by
Baylea Higgs and
Emily Otto as Gold Glove recipients. Jameyson, Higgs, Nunez and
Kinsie Hebler were named First Team All-LSC, the first time in school history that four players were named to the First Team. Otto was named Second Team All-LSC and
Kayla Kilcrease brought home Third Team All-LSC honors. All awards were announced Thursday by the LSC.
After receiving LSC Newcomer of the Year honors as a junior, Jameyson improved on her already stellar numbers during the 2018 campaign. The senior from Seattle, Wash. was a top-5 statistical leader in several categories and received national recognition several times during the season. She is currently a Top-25 finalist for the NFCA National Player of the Year and was a two-time NFCA National Player of the Week and a one-time Fastpitch News National Player of the Week.
Jameyson finished the regular season as the nation's leader in on-base percentage (.644). She was second in the nation in batting average (.542), slugging percentage (1.137) and RBIs (80), third in total bases (149), fourth in walks (39) and fifth in home runs (22). Jameyson's .542 batting average was nearly .100 points better than any other player in the LSC and broke the single-season record that was set in 1997. Jameyson also had an on-base percentage more than .100 points higher than any other LSC player. She was also the only hitter in the LSC to finish the season with a slugging percentage over 1.000. Jameyson led the LSC in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, RBIs, hits (71) and walks (39). She had the game-winning RBI in 13 different games this season. This is the second All-LSC selection of her career and her first All-Academic award.
Higgs– a senior from Arlington– set career bests in batting average (.411), runs scored (50), hits (62), RBI (34) and doubles. She led the LSC in triples with five and was third in the conference with 26 stolen bases. She finished third amongst outfielders in both runs scored and batting average and was second in hits. As a defender, Higgs led the LSC with a perfect fielding percentage. She also robbed two home runs during the year and made numerous diving catches. This is the third All-LSC award of her career and her second Gold Glove award.
Nunez– a junior from Amarillo– set career highs in batting average (.375), runs scored (55), walks (36) and steals (44). Nunez led the LSC in stolen bases and finished fifth in the nation. She was also in the top 10 in walks and in the top 20 in the nation in runs scored. Nunez was second in the LSC in walks, third in runs scored and fourth in on-base percentage (.506). On defense, Nunez finished the season with a .986 fielding percentage with 65 putouts. She robbed one home run and made numerous diving catches throughout the year. This is the second All-LSC selection of her career, her second All-Academic award and her first Gold Glove award.
Hebler– a sophomore from Cypress– improved her batting average (.414), home runs (15) and RBIs (56) from her freshman season and has received national recognition for her play. Hebler is a current Top-25 Finalist for the NFCA National Player of the Year award and was named Fastpitch News National Player of the Week. She finished in the top 20 in the nation in home runs, RBIs, slugging percentage (.814) and total bases (118). Hebler finished fifth in the LSC in RBIs, home runs, walks and on-base percentage and sixth in batting average. She had the game-winning RBI in 12 different games this season. This is the second All-LSC selection of her career.
Otto– a freshman from Richmond– had an impressive freshman season in the circle for the Lions. She set the single-season school record with 16 wins. She pitched a no-hitter against West Texas A&M, who was the best-hitting team in the nation at the time. She led the LSC with five saves and finished fourth in the league, holding hitters to a .211 average. She also finished in the top 10 in the league in ERA and strikeouts. She led all freshmen in every pitching category. She also finished the season with a perfect fielding percentage. This is the first All-Conference award of her career and her first Gold Glove award.
Kilcrease– a junior from Kerens– finished the regular season setting career highs in batting average (.292), hits (26), runs scored (26), doubles (5), home runs (8), RBIs (24), walks (14) and stolen bases (7). In the outfield, she recorded 44 putouts and two assists, helping throw out a runner at the plate to help the Lions to a win earlier in the season. Kilcrease hit .333 in LSC play with seven homers and 21 RBIs. This is the first All-LSC selection of her career.
The No. 13 Lions are the third seed in the LSC Tournament and will face Texas A&M-Kingsville in the first round of the single elimination tournament. The game will be played on Friday at 11 a.m. Should the Lions advance, they would face No. 10 West Texas A&M, the second seed in the tournament, in the semifinal round. The championship game will be played on Saturday at 2 p.m. All games will be played at Mayer Field in San Angelo.
