Lion Soccer downs Dustdevils, 3-0, moves into sixth place in LSC standings

LAREDO – In the penultimate match of the regular season, the Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer team shut out Texas A&M International, 3-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Dustdevil Field to increase their total to 19 points in the Lone Star Conference standings.
 
The Lions improve to 6-5-1 in Lone Star Conference play with its second consecutive day. A&M-Commerce entered Wednesday in a tie for eighth place with 16 points. The rest of the conference is in action later in the day on Wednesday, the Lions are tied for sixth place with 19 points at the completion of this afternoon's match.
 
Key matches that can affect the Lions' positioning in the standings on Wednesday are Angelo State at St. Edward's (4 p.m.), West Texas A&M at Oklahoma Christian (4:30 p.m.), and UT Tyler at St. Mary's (6 p.m.)
 
Texas A&M International is 2-9-1 in conference play.
 
A&M-Commerce posted 11 shots in the first half, including six on goal, but the Dustdevils' Fabiana Solano stopped all six shots. She had 14 saves in the match. Jen Peters (Allen) stopped all four shots on goal she faced for the Lions' seventh shutout this year.
 
Karalie Morrison (North Richland Hills – Colleyville Heritage) and Leslie Campuzano (Garland – Lakeview Centennial) had three shots on goal each in the first half. Campuzano had 10 shots in the match, including six on goal. This is the fourth time that Campuzano, a fifth-year senior, has had 10 or more shots in a match.
 
The Lions had 12 corner kicks in the match. Following a corner kick at the 48:23 mark in the second half, the Dustdevils were called for a handball in the penalty box. Morrison took the penalty kick and converted it for her 12th goal of the year.
 
Morrison is second in the LSC with 12 goals and 30 points in her first season of collegiate soccer.
 
Despite having the 1-0 lead, the Lions stayed aggressive and put three shots on goal in a span of 43 seconds, which were saved. The Lions got another corner kick at the 57:18 mark, which was taken by Morrison towards the goal. Solano tipped the shot toward the back post, where McKenna Keeley (Frisco – Memorial) headed in the Lions' second goal.
 
The Dustdevils played the final 29 minutes of the match down a player. Valeria Macias received a red card at the 61:05 mark.
 
Naomi Sink (Plano East) scored the third goal for the Lions. She received a cross pass from Christina Hernandez (Denison) and kicked it in with 10 minutes left. It was the third goal of Sink's career.
 
The Lions had 28 shots in the match, which are the most this season. A&M-Commerce has had at least 18 shots in each of its last three matches, including the last two being shutout wins.
 
Keeley, Sink, and Hailey Griffin (Trophy Club – Byron Nelson) had two shots each.

The Lions complete the regular season on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Oklahoma Christian. Prior to the match at the Lion Soccer Field, the Lions will honor graduating seniors: Kara Blasingame, Leslie Campuzano, Rylie Robertson, Skylar Sorrell, and Cora Welch.
