No. 15 Lions return from weather break with key game with Midwestern State

COMMERCE – The 15th-ranked Texas A&M University-Commerce women's basketball team looks to close the 2020-21 season on a strong note, closing the year with two home games. The first will come on Monday evening, looking to avenge an earlier loss to Midwestern State.

The latest… 
TAMUC had a six-game win streak snapped by Cameron in a 66-61 home loss, then had an extended hiatus forced by the winter weather which visited Texas last week. The Lions have a bitter taste in their mouth and are looking to avenge that loss as well as the 85-82 loss to MSU on January 10.

The Lions now have two of the four leading scorers in the LSC, led by Dyani Robinson's 17.2 points per game. Robinson entered the ranking after the Cameron game, as she reached the standard of playing in 75 percent of her team's games. DesiRay Kernal ranks fourth in the LSC at 15.7 points per game. Robinson also ranks seventh in the conference in shooting percentage at 41.9.

Juliana Louis ranks fourth in the conference at 8.7 boards per game and Kernal's 6.6 boards per game ranks seventh in the league.
 
On the opponent…
The Mustangs' are ranked second in the conference in rebounding at 39.9 rebounds per game, just behind A&M-Commerce's 43.3 rebounds per game. MSU is fifth in the conference in scoring at 68.4 points per game and average a +3.3 scoring margin per game.

Morgan Lenahan is the Mustangs' leading scorer, ranking 11th in the league at 13.9 points per game. Haevyn Risley ranks eighth in the league in rebounding at 8.4 boards per game. Frances King is fourth in the league in assists at 4.1 dimes per game.
 
The earlier matchup…
A&M-Commerce was led by DesiRay Kernal had a career-high 26 points. She went 8-for-14, was perfect from long range (1-for-1) and efficient from the charity stripe (9-of-12). She was second on the team with seven rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Keekee Nowlin, Chania Wright, and Ravae Payne all scored in double digits for the Lions with 15, 12 and 12 respectively. MSU outshot the Lions by the end, 46%-39%, despite being neck and neck heading into the final few minutes of play.  The Mustangs out-rebounded A&M-Commerce 45-33, including 13-9 on the offensive end of the floor. 
 
On the series history…
This is the 72nd meeting between the schools in a series dating back to 1976. MSU has a 44-27 lead in the series. The MSU win earlier this year snapped a streak of five straight wins by the Lions. A&M-Commerce has won nine of the last 11 games in the series, with both losses coming by exactly three points.
