COMMERCE – Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer team collected a 2-1 win over the Houston Christian Huskies on Sunday afternoon at Sorrels Field to claim sole possession of third place heading into the final day of the regular season.
Entering the day, A&M-Commerce, HCU, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi were tied for third place with 16 points each in the Southland Conference. The Lions downed the Huskies on Sunday to sweep the season series, while the Islanders fell to Lamar and do not own the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Lions.
The Lions, who are 6-4-1 overall and 6-8-2 overall, can clinch the No. 3 seed in the SLC Tournament with a win at home on Friday against McNeese. The SLC Tournament is in Natchitoches, Louisiana, from November 2-6. Lamar clinched the SLC regular season title on Sunday and Northwestern State is locked in as the No. 2 seed.
"Sundays are a grind and our hard work and mentality pulled us through today. Our team executed the game plan and earned three points, which is crucial on Sundays. The wind was a factor in the game and I thought our players handled the conditions once we settled down," said coach
Ashley Gordon.
Karalie Morrison (Colleyville Heritage) scored in the eighth minute on an assist from
Mya Mitchell (Dallas – Mesquite Horn) and
Hailey Griffin (Byron Nelson). Griffin passed it to Mitchell, who dribbled down the field, and kicked in a perfect cross pass to Morrison, who scored her third goal of the season.
Gordon added, "Mya had great determination to get to the end line and serve the perfect ball and Karalie had great composure in front of the net"
The Huskies tied the match in the 22
nd minute with Evelyn Slaughter, scoring on assists by Kat Lazor and Rizo Talin. Lazor had a long pass from 60 yards out to Slaughter, who scored her first goal of the season.
Despite being outshot 21-7 in the match, the Lions took the lead in the 63
rd minute on a goal from
Mindy Shoffit (Wichita Falls – Rider).
Ashley Campuzano (Dallas – Atlas Prep) took a corner kick that was headed in by Shoffit, her third goal of the season.
"Ashley served a great corner and Mindy timed the header perfectly on the backside," concluded Gordon.
Jen Peters (Allen) stopped two of the three shots she faced in goal during the first half, while
Gillian McKenzie (Mesquite Horn) stopped five shots in the second half. Mitchell tallied seven shots, while Houston Christian's Chloe Bagshaw saved one of the three shots she faced on goal.
Ryan Ford tallied six shots for HCU, including two on goal, but was kept off the scoresheet, while Katie Marker had three shots on goal and kept scoreless as well. HCU had five corner kicks compared to four for A&M-Commerce.

The regular season concludes on Friday at 7 p.m. against McNeese. The Lions enjoyed a 2-1 win over the Cowgirls in Lake Charles, Louisiana, earlier this season.
