No. 19 Lions sweep Aggies on Senior Day, keep pace in LSC standings

COMMERCE – The No. 19 ranked Texas A&M University-Commerce softball team plated eight runs in each end of the doubleheader sweep of the Cameron Aggies on Friday by scores of 8-3 and 8-0 in five innings, respectively, at the John Cain Family Field.
 
The Lions improve to 20-6 in Lone Star Conference action with four games left and 37-11 overall. A&M-Commerce is tied for second place with Lubbock Christian and Oklahoma Christian and two games back of UT Tyler for first place. The Lions end the season with a pair of games against the Eagles and the Patriots.
 
SENIOR DAY
Between the two games on Friday, the Lions honored their three graduating seniors, Sabrina Anguiano (Riverside, Calif.), Emily Otto (Lamar Consolidated), and Destiny Vasquez (Norwalk, Calif.).
 
POSTGAME INTERVIEW
 
GAME 1: No. 19 A&M-Commerce 8, Cameron 3
Two straight singles from Alyssa LeBlanc (Katy) and Avery Boley (Fort Worth – Nolan Catholic) started the second and Anguiano reached on an error to load the bases with no outs. Uxua Modrego (Burlada, Spain) brought in LeBlanc with a ground out, while both Anguiano and Boley scored on a two-run single by MacKenzie Dugi (St. Hedwig – East Central).
 
Leo Terry (Emory – Rains) singled up the middle to lead off the third and scored on a double to left by Boley. Alina Jasso (San Benito) reached base via a hit by pitch and came around to score on an RBI base hit by Modrego. Madison Schaefer (Frisco – Independence) homered to left in the fifth, for her sixth longball of the season.
 
MADISON SCHAEFER HOME RUN HIGHLIGHT

The three runs for the Aggies in game one came via one swing off the bat of Madyson Marvulli, who hit a three-run home run to left.
 
Modrego added a two-run home run to left center in the sixth to increase the lead back up to five with Jasso also scoring on the play.
 
UXUA MODREGO FIRST HOME RUN HIGHLIGHT
 
The Aggies had two on with two outs in the seventh. Otto collected her fourth strikeout of the day for her 18th win of the season. She allowed four hits, no walks, but hit two batters and improves to 18-3 on the season. Breley Webb allowed three earned runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings.
 
Terry went 2 for 4 in the game, while both Boley and Modrego went 2 for 3. Modrego drove in four runs. Terry and Jasso stole two bases as well.
 
GAME 2: No. 19 A&M-Commerce 8, Cameron 0 (Five Innings)
Chanlee Oakes (Emory – Rains) broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning with a two-run home run that bounced off a light pole in left field. Modrego was the next batter due up and she hit her second home run of the day, this one to left field.

Terry added two more runs in the fourth with a triple to left center that scored Schaefer and Dugi. The Lions scored five runs on five hits in the fourth and left one on base.
 
Boley homered off the left field foul pole in the fifth inning, the first of three runs in the inning.
 
AVERY BOLEY HOME RUN HIGHLIGHT
 
Oakes drew a walk and Jasso came in to pinch run. Modrego reached on a dropped third strike and Avery Ziegler (Southlake – Carroll) came in as pinch hitter, drawing a walk and loaded the bases. Schaefer ended the game with a walk-off two-run single to right center, allowing Modrego and Jasso to score.
 
LeBlanc got the complete game shutout win, allowing two hits, one hit batter in five innings. She struck out eight and is 13-6 on the season. Jocelyn Bright dropped to 7-7 on the season, allowing six earned runs in 4.1 innings, while recording seven strikeouts.
 
Schaefer went 3 for 3 in the game, while Oakes went 2 for 2. Both Schaefer, Oakes, as well as Terry drove in two runs each.
 
UP NEXT
The Lions' originally scheduled games against Oklahoma Christian on Sunday have been moved to Tuesday at the Cain Family Field due to inclement weather. First pitch is set for noon on Tuesday.
