BEAUMONT – The Lamar Cardinals scored three goals in the final 11 minutes of Sunday's match at the LU Soccer Complex to stun the Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer team, 3-1, in a battle of the last two remaining undefeated teams in Southland Conference play.
The Lion goal was scored by
Mya Mitchell (Dallas – Mesquite Horn) in the 21
st minute, her fourth in the last three matches, she is the only player in the conference with four goals in conference matches as well as the only one to score in every conference match.
"Today was a tough loss, Sundays are about mentality and the young ladies fought hard today," said coach
Ashley Gordon. "We learned some tough lessons in the last 10 minutes of the match. I'm proud of the team regardless of today's outcome. Three points on the road is very difficult and we achieved that this weekend. We will recover and be ready for next Sunday's home match vs Northwestern State."
Her goal in the 21
st minute was assisted by
Karalie Morrison (Colleyville Heritage), who has five points in conference play, which is third in the SLC.
The Cardinals had 18 shots in the match, nine in each half. After keeping the ball out of the net through the first 13 shots, the Cardinals scored on three straight shots to take the lead and improve to 7-0-1 on the season. Lamar is 3-0 in SLC play, while A&M-Commerce drops to 2-1 in conference play and 2-5-1 overall.
Isela Ramirez tied the match in the 79
th minute, Ellis Cariel put Lamar ahead in the 83
rd minute, receiving assists from Christine Kitaru and Kolbi Coleman. Kitaru scored the third goal of the match for the Cardinals in the 85
th minute, Ellis assisted on that goal. Abby Gemza had six shots, but was held without a goal.
The Lions had 10 shots in the match with three coming from Mitchell and two from Morrison, which both went on goal. Nicole Panis recorded four saves in net for Lamar, while
Gillian McKenzie (Mesquite Horn) had four saves.
A&M-Commerce had the 9-6 edge in fouls and 7-5 edge in corner kicks, while two Lion players received yellow cards in the match.
UP NEXT
The Lions host Northwestern State next Sunday at 1 p.m. The Lady Demons, the defending SLC Champions, are 1-1-1 in conference matches this season and 4-2-2 overall.
