COLORADO, Col. - Mindy Shoffit scored the equalizing goal in the 87th minute for the Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer team to clinch a 2-2 tie at Colorado College on Sunday afternoon at Stewart Field.
The Lions snap a four-match losing streak to start the season and scored their first two goals as a Division I program. The first goal of the match was an own goal by the Tigers and the other came off the foot of Shoffit (Wichita Falls - Rider) in the 87th minute and assisted by
Ashley Campuzano (Dallas - Atlas Prep).
Sunday's matchup against Colorado College, an affiliate member of the Mountain West Conference, was the final non-conference tilt of the season for the Lions. This is the first tie for the Lions since a 2-2 tie against Angelo State last season.
"I am proud of the women today," said coach
Ashley Gordon. "Sundays are a grind and the team fought and played with mentality. Scoring goals is hard and even harder on the road. It was a team effort to get points on the road today."
In the 12th minute,
Karalie Morrison (Colleyville Heritage) crossed a pass into the box that deflected off a Tiger defender and ended up in the back of the net for the Lions' first goal of the season.
The Tigers tied the match in the 25th minute via a penalty kick by Lily Byrne. Despite a total of 30 combined shots from both teams, the match remained tied till the 76th minute until the Tigers took the lead on a goal from Jordan Darrow, assisted by Gracie Huebner.
The Lions had three shots in quick succession trying to tie the match. In the 87th minute, Campuzano took a corner kick that was sent into the goal by Shoffit for the equalizer and the first goal scored by a field player this season.
Gillian McKenzie (Mesquite Horn) stopped six shots in net, starting her first career match and playing the full 90 minutes. The Tigers switched goalkeepers at halftime with both goalkeepers allowing a goal each.
Campuzano had four shots for the Lions, while Byrne had four shots for the Tigers, who outshot A&M-Commerce,18-12.
Colorado College drops to 3-2-1 on the season, while A&M-Commerce improves to 0-4-1.
