Lions and Cardinals tie 1-1 on Senior Day

COMMERCE – The Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer team and the UIW Cardinals played to a 1-1 tie on Sunday afternoon at the Lion Soccer Field as part of the Lions' Senior Day.

The Lions have 20 points in the Southland Conference standings heading into the final match of the regular season, while the Cardinals have seven. A&M-Commerce and McNeese meet in the season finale next Friday and the Lions need at least a tie to secure the No. 2 seed in the SLC Tournament.

SENIOR DAY
Prior to the match, the Lions honored their graduating seniors Christina Hernandez (Denison), Mindy Shoffit (Wichita Falls – Rider), and Melissa Storey (Tyne and Wear, England) with a Senior Day ceremony.

The Cardinals scored first on Sunday afternoon, tallying a goal in the 32nd minute. Brianna Mata scored her third goal of the season on assists by Sierra Wannamaker and Melissa Bailey. A shot from Wannamaker bounced off the post and Mata kicked in the rebound.

It took the Lions less than four minutes to tie the match as Kaydence Ramirez (Waxahachie) extended her scoring streak to seven and added her 10th goal of the season. A long throw in from Shoffit went into the box for Ramirez, who kicked it in. She is the SLC leader in goals, points and shots. KAYDENCE RAMIREZ GOAL HIGHLIGHT

The two teams combined for seven shots on goal in the second half, but both Gillian McKenzie (Mesquite Horn) for the Lions and Erica Defferding for the Cardinals, did not allow a second half goal.

Ramirez had five of the 13 shots for the Lions, while Bailey Moyer was UIW's shot leader, off the bench, with three. McKenzie made five saves, while Defferding had six.

The Lions had the 12-1 edge in corner kicks, while UIW had the 16-13 advantage in shots.

Sunday was the final home match for the Lions, who went 5-1-2 at the Lion Soccer Field this season.
