COMMERCE – Record books were re-written on Wednesday night at the Field House in the Texas A&M University-Commerce men's basketball team's 113-63 win over the Science & Arts Drovers, which was the Lions' 2023-24 home opener.
The 113 points scored for the Lions are the most in the Division I era and fourth in program history. A large portion of the Lion scoring came from the distance as they shot 19 for 43 from beyond-the-arc.
The Lions tied the program record for three-pointers attempted (43) and finished third all-time with 19 three-pointers made. Also, every Lion that appeared in the game, scored at least two points.
Both teams were scoreless through the first 1:44, until the Lions made a free throw and then knocked down a tip-in on another missed free throw. The Drovers tied the game at three and took a 10-8 lead, but the Lions went on a 13-0 run to lead, 21-10, at the 12:34 mark of the first half.
The lead did not exchange hands for the rest of the night. At the end of the first half, A&M-Commerce had a 60-30 lead. The Lions shot 62.9 percent from in the field and made 11 three pointers in the first half.
Jerome Brewer Jr. (Camden, N.J.), who came into the game averaging 12.3 points per game, scored 12 on 5 for 8 shooting in the first half. He finished the game with 14 points, while
Tommie Lewis (Vero Beach, Fla.) scored 13 and
Zondrick Garrett (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) added 12 points in 18 minutes, making his first start as a Lion.
Off the bench, the Lions scored 61 points.
Evan Phelps (Duncanville) scored 13 on 5 for 8 shooting.
Prince Davies (Atlanta, Ga.) grabbed five rebounds in nine minutes, which led the team.
Ant Abraham (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) led the team with six assists.
The Lions shot 58.9 percent from the field, holding the Drovers to a field percentage of .429. Reggie Quezada scored 19 to lead Science & Arts.
