Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Buzzer-beat comes up short, Lions fall 75-74 to the Lobos

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A last-second shot from Mia Deck bounced off the rim at The Pit on Wednesday night and that is all that separated the Texas A&M University-Commerce women's basketball team and New Mexico as the Lobos hung on for a 75-74 win.

The Lions trailed by five at halftime, but outscored the Lobos by 10 in the third quarter to enter the fourth with a lead. New Mexico did not have its first lead of the fourth quarter until the 4:11 mark. With 2:16 left in the game and New Mexico leading 73-69, Deck (Frisco – Lone Star) scored a layup and grabbed a defensive rebound to set up the Lions for a chance to tie or take the lead.

Mary Delgado (Miami, Fla.) knocked down a three-pointer for a 74-73 lead with 1:41 to go. The Lobos scored a layup on the other end to re-take the lead. The Lions had two shot attempts to take the lead, but both missed, including the shot by Deck with time expiring, that bounced off both the backboard and the rim.

The Lobos move to 4-0 on the season, while the Lions fell for the first time this season and are now 2-1. There a total of 13 lead changes in the game.

Wednesday night was homecoming for A&M-Commerce as head coach Valerie King returned to New Mexico, where she was a seven-year assistant coach and the Lions' director of basketball operations, Jaedyn Le Cerda, a former UNM player, returned to her home state first time as a coach.

A&M-Commerce had a lead as big as five in the first quarter, but the Lobos came back to make it a one-point game at the end of the first quarter. New Mexico outscored A&M-Commerce by six in the second quarter and led by seven, but a jumper just before the halftime buzzer by Delgado brought the deficit down to five.

In the third quarter, the Lions stretched out their lead to five, which was part of a 7-0 scoring run, but a 5-0 run was served back by UNM to tie the game at 54.

For the second straight game, Delgado was the leading scorer for the Lions, and she came off the bench each time. On Wednesday, she totaled 19 points, three rebounds, and an assist. Delgado was 7 for 14 from the field, 3 for 6 from the distance, and 2 for 3 at the line.

Deck added 19 points, six rebounds, and three assists, as well as a steal. Jordyn Newsome (Irving – MacArthur) scored 17 for the Lions as well as four rebounds and an assist. Also coming off the bench, Jasmine Payne (Montgomery, Ala.) posted 10 points and seven rebounds.

For the Lobos, Nyah Wilson scored 22, while Charlotte Kohl had a double-double with 14 points and 20 rebounds, which included 10 on the offensive side.
