Slow starts hurts Lion Women's Basketball at Texas Tech

LUBBOCK – Slow scoring to start the game on Friday night caused the Texas A&M University-Commerce women's basketball team to suffer a 91-45 loss to Texas Tech at United Supermarkets Arena.
 
A&M-Commerce falls to 2-2 on the season, while the Red Raiders are 4-0. This was the first meeting between the two teams.
 
The Lions were held without a point in the first quarter, which is the first scoreless quarter in program history since the sport of women's basketball switched to quarters. Texas Tech led 23-0 after the first 10 minutes as A&M-Commerce shot 0 for 16 in the first quarter.
 
The first Lion basket came at the 8:05 mark of the second quarter and it was a jumper from Mary Delgado (Miami, Fla.), who scored the first four points of the game for the Lions.
 
The Red Raiders scored the first 29 points of the game and led 44-10 at the half. The Lions shot 4 for 30 in the first half with Delgado scoring four, Dorian Norris (Lake Dallas) adding four, including two at the line, and Ahmya Boyce (Newport News, Va.) knocked in a layup.
 
Texas Tech shot 50 percent from the field in the first half with Bailey Maupin scoring 12 and Jordyn Merritt adding 11. The Red Raiders scored 23 in the third quarter, but the Lions responded by scoring 21, going 8 for 10 at the line.
 
Boyce was the team leader in scoring for the Lions with 15. She scored 13 coming in the second half. Norris added 15 off the bench, which is a new career-high for the junior guard. She also led the team with five rebounds. Mia Deck (Frisco – Lone Star) recorded three steals.
 
Four of the five starters for the Red Raiders scored in double digits. Maupin finished the game with 17 points, while Jasmine Shavers had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Kilah Freelon recorded 14 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double.
