COMMERCE – Hitting 14 three pointers once again, the Texas A&M University-Commerce women's basketball team picked up an 84-75 win over Utah Tech, coming back from being down 11, on Monday afternoon at the Field House.
The Lions snapped their two-game losing skid and picked up their first win over a Division I opponent this season for a record of 3-2. The Trailblazers, who are in the final year of transition into the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and NCAA Division I, are 2-2. The two teams met in St. George, Utah, last year with Utah Tech winning 82-62.
Utah Tech led 16-5 to start the game at the 6:25 mark of the first quarter. The Lions went on a 12-0 scoring run to take their first lead of the game. Despite the Trailblazers hitting back-to-back three pointers in the final minute of the first quarter, the Lions'
Mary Delgado (Miami, Fla.) knocked down a jumper right before the buzzer to trim the lead to 24-22.
The Lions outscored Utah Tech in the second quarter, holding the Trailblazers to just 11 points. Delgado beat the halftime buzzer with a three pointer to give A&M-Commerce a 44-35 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, the Lions had a lead as big as 12, but Utah Tech scored the final four points of the quarter to make it a 62-56 lead entering the fourth quarter for A&M-Commerce.
At the 3:11 mark of the fourth quarter, the Trailblazers pulled to within two with a three pointer and had a chance to take the lead with three free throws at the 1:46 mark.
Utah Tech went 1 for 3, to make it a one-point game and
Ahmya Boyce (Newport News, Va.) swished in a three on the other end to push the lead up to four. Down the stretch, the Lions just missed one free throw to pick up the win.
Delgado and Boyce scored 19 points each. Boyce went 6 for 8 from the distance, which is tied for third in program history. Delgado came off the bench and shot 8 for 19 from the field, adding five rebounds and team-high four assists as well.
Mia Deck (Frisco – Lone Star) posted her first career double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. She recorded two assists and a steal as well.
Jordyn Newsome (Irving – MacArthur) added 15 points, three rebounds, and three assists as well.
The Lions made 14 three pointers for the second time this season, which is tied for second in program history. The 32 three pointers attempted are second-most.
For the Trailblazers, Maddie Warren scored 21 and seven rebounds, while Macie Warren added 15 and Maggie McCord 14.

The Lions are off for Thanksgiving week and return to action on November 29 at Washington State, who is currently nationally ranked. A&M-Commerce also plays at Idaho during the trip to the Pacific Northwest.
