Lion softball beats Akron for first Division I win

STEPHENVILLE – History was made on Friday afternoon at the Tarleton Softball Complex as the Texas A&M University-Commerce softball team picked up its first win as a Division I squad over the Akron Zips by a score of 7-3. The Lions fell 4-0 to Northern Colorado in the nightcap.

Friday's win over Akron was also the first win as a head coach for Brittany Miller. The Lions drop to 1-6 on the season, but play four more games this weekend.

"We came out today and competed in the first game, it was a great team win," said Miller. "The second game got away from us, but we will continue to battle and compete tomorrow!"

GAME 1: A&M-COMMERCE 7, AKRON 3
Akron got the scoring started in the first. Molly McChesney reached on an error, moved to second on a wild pitch, and advanced to third on a ground out. She scored on a double to right center by Kalli Macintosh-Holder.

The Lions plated five runs in the third. Emmie Miehe (Cameron Park, Calif.) led off the inning with a base hit, Kaydee Bennett (Caddo Mills) reached on an error and moved Miehe to second. Ashley Griffith (Cedar Hill) hit a bunt-single to load the bases with no outs. Tatum Wright (Frisco – Centennial) came in as a pinch hitter and hit a single through the left side to bring in Miehe.

Diamond Sefe (Carson, Calif.) brought in both Bennett and Griffith on a two-run single to left. After Ayanna Williams (Round Rock – Cedar Ridge) walked to load the bases once again, Avery Zeigler (Southlake Carroll) reached on a hit by pitch, with KK Cosek (Helendale, Calif.) scoring. Cosek returned to the game after she was pinch hit for by Wright.

The fifth run of the inning was driven in by Elizabeth Guerrero (International School of Americas) on a sacrifice fly to center field, which plated Sefe. Akron escaped the inning with no further damage thanks to two strikeouts.

Bennett doubled down the left field line in the fourth and moved to third on a wild pitch. Griffith brough her in with an RBI groundout. In the bottom of the fifth, Akron added its second run as Alexis Campbell hit a sacrifice fly to center.

In the sixth, Bennett reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a groundout, and to third on a wild pitch. She scored an infield single by Cosek.

The Zips scored their final run of the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Campbell singled through the left side and brought in a run.

Miehe went 2 for 3 in the game, she was the lone Lion that had multi hits in the game. Sefe drove in two runs, while Kasey Kuyrkendall (Royse City) had a stolen base, coming in as a pinch runner.

Anissa Arredondo (San Antonio – Warren) got the win in the circle. She allowed no earned runs in five innings, allowing six hits. Julia Sanchez (The Kinkaid School) came in relief and allowed an earned run in two innings, while striking out two.

For Akron, Abigail Scheller and Brooke Sivek had two hits each for Akron. Olivia Otani took the loss in the game; she allowed four earned runs in two innings of work. She allowed four hits and two walks.

GAME 2: NORTHERN COLORADO 4, A&M-COMMERCE 0
A&M-Commerce put two on with one out in the first and had runners at second and third, but a strikeout and a groundout ended the threat. The Golden Bears loaded the bases in the second, but a strikeout left them loaded.

Alyssa Wenzel led off the third with a base hit to left. After two fly outs, Alexsi Barashkoff and Amalie Morales hit back-to-back singles to load the bases. Peyton Gale drove in two runs with a single that stayed in the infield for the first runs of the game. UNC left the bases loaded in the third.

Northern Colorado added its other two runs in the fourth. Wenzel walked and scored on an RBI triple to right center by Paola Villegas, who scored on an RBI groundout by Carson Fischer.

A&M-Commerce was held to just hit in the game, which came off the bat of Zeigler in the first inning. Sefe came in as a pinch hitter in the seventh and drew the lone walk of the game. Williams and Zeigler had a stolen base each in the game.

In the circle, McKenna Meadors (The Woodlands Christian Academy) got the start and was charged with the loss. She allowed four earned runs in four innings. Sanchez tossed three shutout innings in relief.
