Early runs power Lions over Lady Demons in game one, game two to resume on Saturday morning

COMMERCE – Battling the elements all day on Friday, the Texas A&M University-Commerce collected a 2-0 win in game one at John Cain Family Field over Northwestern State, while game two is suspended due to inclement weather.

The Lions have won two in a row and lead the second game of the series 3-1 in the top of the fourth when it resumes at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning. The final game of the series will begin 30 minutes after the completion of game two. The Lions will honor their graduating seniors between games.

Game 1: A&M-COMMERCE 2, NORTHWESTERN STATE 0
Avery Zeigler (Southlake Carroll) got the Lions on the board quickly in the bottom of the first. She led off the game with a home run to left, her third of the season and the Lions' first at home this season. A&M-Commerce left the bases loaded in the first.

In the second, KK Cosek (Helendale, Calif.) led off the second with a single to right center and moved to third on a one-out double to right center by Zeigler. Kaydee Bennett (Caddo Mills) singled to center to bring in Cosek. A&M-Commerce had just two base runners for the rest of the game, neither scored.

The Lady Demons left six on base, while Camryn Ford and Ashlyn Walker had a hit each. Keely Dubois walked twiced. For the Lions, seniors Zeigler and Ayanna Williams (Round Rock – Cedar Ridge) went 2 for 3.

Julia Sanchez threw her third consecutive complete-game shutout. She walked four and allowed two hits, while striking out one. She has won six of the eight games for the Lions. Maggie Darr took the loss for the Lady Demons, being charged with two earned runs in 1.1 innings.

Game 2: A&M-COMMERCE 3, NORTHWESTERN STATE 1 (Suspended in the top of the fourth)
Zeigler, Bennett, and Diamond Sefe (Carson, Calif.) loaded the bases with three straight singles to start the bottom of the first. After a strikeout and a fielder's choice on which Northwestern State opted to take the out at home, a lightning delay of nearly two hours ensued.

After the delay, Cosek was at the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. Bennett scored from third on a wild pitch on the first pitch after the delay.

Bennett led off the third with a base hit to third, stole second, and scored on an RBI double to center by Sefe. After a walk drawn by Williams, America Rubio (El Paso – Montwood) advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Cosek walked to load the bases once again and Camile Nunez (Madera, Calif.) brought home Sefe with a sacrifice fly to right.

Dubois doubled to center to start the fourth, Kat Marshall followed with a double to left center to bring home Dubois, the Lady Demons' first run of the day. Another lightning delay ensued and both teams agreed to suspend play for the rest of the night and resume on Saturday morning.

Anissa Arredondo (San Antonio – Warren) is in the circle for the Lions and Kenzie Seely is pitching for the Lady Demons.
