Lion Soccer downs Tulsa for first win of 2023

COMMERCE – The Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer team downed Tulsa, 2-0, on Thursday night at the Lion Soccer Field to collect its first win of the season.

The Lions improved to 1-1-1, being unbeaten at home, while the Golden Hurricane fall to 0-3 on the season. Thursday's win is the first non-conference win for the Lions since moving up to NCAA Division I.

Kaydence Ramirez (Waxahachie) got the Lions on the board in the 11th minute with another set piece goal. Mya Mitchell (Dallas – Mesquite Horn) took a corner kick off the near corner and it was headed in by Ramirez.

The two teams combined for 10 fouls in the first half, including a yellow card received by both teams. Tulsa outshot A&M-Commerce, 6-4, in the first 45 minutes, while the Lions held the Golden Hurricane without a shot in the second half for the first 22 minutes.

After being held without a shot for the first portion of the second half, the Golden Hurricane tallied five shots in quick succession, but could not get a goal across. Lion freshman goalkeeper Sophia Dean (Spring – Grand Oaks) collected her first career shutout and recorded three saves, while playing all 90 minutes.

The Lions held possession for most of the match thanks in large part due to midfielders Camila Montero (Langham Creek), who logged 78 minutes, and Ashley Campuzano (Dallas – Atlas Prep), who played 83 minutes.

Campuzano scored her first goal of the season in the 87th minute on a penalty kick to make it 2-0. Tulsa committed 15 fouls in the match, while A&M-Commerce committed 13.

Overall, the Golden Hurricane had the 11-9 advantage in shots, while both teams had six corner kicks each. A&M-Commerce had just two shots on goal, but both ended up in the back of the net.
