HAMMOND, La. – The Texas A&M University-Commerce men's basketball team rolled to a 68-52 win over Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday afternoon at the Pride Roofing University Center for the first Southland Conference win of the season.
The win snaps a four-game losing streak for A&M-Commerce, improving to 7-10 overall and 1-3 in SLC action. Southeastern falls to 6-11 overall and 1-4 against Southland teams. Saturday's win is the first ever win for A&M-Commerce over Southeastern in men's or women's basketball since the Lions joined the Southland.
A&M-Commerce jumped out 7-3, behind four points from
Tommie Lewis (Vero Beach, Fla.), who scored six of the first nine points for the Lions. Southeastern went on a 6-0 run to take a 12-11 lead with 12:52 left in the first half, the Lions scored the next five to go back up by five and did not trail again in the game.
The Lions outscored Southeastern 13-3, which included a 6-0 run, to take a 31-19 lead at the 1:32 mark of the first half. A&M-Commerce had a lead as big as 14 in the first half, shooting 43 percent from the field and making six three-pointers. Southeastern shot 35 percent in the first half, but trailed 34-22 at the break.
Lewis and
VJ Reeves Jr. (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) scored six points each in the first half.
Kalen Williams (Augusta, Ga.) totaled five rebounds.
In the second half, the Lions shot 6 for 12 from deep and outscored Southeastern, 34-30.
Kalen Williams (Augusta, Ga.) scored 13 points for A&M-Commerce in the second half, which included three shots from deep. The Lions had a 14-6 edge in second chance points and led by as much as 16 in the second half.
Along with 15 points, Williams also tallied nine rebounds and four assists. Lewis dished out seven assists, while scoring 14 points, while Reeves added 13 points and two rebounds.
Kwo Agwa (Calgary, Canada) recorded seven points, two rebounds, three steals, and two blocks.
Both Agwa and
Prince Davies (Atlanta, Ga.) started their first games as Lions.
Roger McFarlane scored 19 points for Southeastern, while adding eight rebounds as well. Nick Caldwell totaled 12 points and five rebounds.
A&M-Commerce outshot Southeastern, 46 percent to 41 percent, had the 12-3 edge in three-pointers made, and 14-6 advantage in second chance points.
