Williams' 26 powers comeback win over UIW

COMMERCE – A second half 14-0 run on Wednesday night powered the Texas A&M University-Commerce men's basketball team in a 71-66 comeback win over UIW at the Field House. 
 
The Lions trailed by as much as nine in the second half, but they scored the next 14 points to take the lead once again on the way to their second Southland Conference win of the season.
 
A&M-Commerce snapped a three-game losing streak and is now 2-6 in Southland play and 8-13 overall, while UIW is 6-14 overall and 1-6 in conference play. This game was originally scheduled for January 15, but was re-scheduled to Wednesday night due to inclement weather.
 
Kwo Agwa (Calgary, Canada) and Tommie Lewis (Vero Beach, Fla.) made back-to-back three pointers to give the Lions an early 6-0 lead, but the Cardinals scored the next nine to lead 9-6 at the 16:24 mark of the first half.
 
The Cardinals had a lead as big as four in the first half, but the Lions tied the game at 23 on a free throw by Lewis at the 6:33 mark and he hit another free throw to put the Lions back up front and they did not trail again in the half.
 
Kalen Williams (Augusta, Ga.) shot 5 for 10 in the first half along with a pair of free throws for 12 points, while Lewis had eight, as the Lions led 34-33 at the break.
 
The Cardinals scored the first six points of the second half and increased their lead to 49-40 at the 15:20 mark of the second half. A&M-Commerce scored the next 14, starting with a three pointer from Evan Phelps (Duncanville) and two three pointers from Lewis to tie the game at the 13:34 mark.
 
Agwa shot two free throws to give the Lions the lead once again and James "Pop" Weathers (Baton Rouge, La.) added a three pointer to put the Lions up 54-49 with 11:36 left in the game. Williams scored a layup at the 7:52 mark to put A&M-Commerce up 59-53, but the Cardinals scored eight of the next nine to lead 61-60 at the 3:40 mark.
 
Williams made another layup to end the streak of no field goals for the Lions at the 3:25 mark. The Cardinals led 66-64 with 1:08 left in the game, but Ant Abraham drilled a three pointer with 51 seconds to go to put the Lions up for good.
 
Williams went 4 for 4 at the line down the stretch, as the Cardinals missed two shots that would have either tied the game or put them up front.
 
The Lions shot 42 percent from the field, 45 percent from deep, and 18 for 23 at the line, while the Cardinals went 45 percent from the field, 28 percent from deep, and 56 percent at the line.
 
A&M-Commerce recorded 11 blocks, which are the most against a Division I opponent in program history. Agwa recorded six blocks, which is tied for fifth in program history, while Alonzo Dodd (St. Paul, Minn.) picked up four blocks.
 
Williams scored 26 for the Lions, while Lewis scored 18. Williams also led the team with five assists, while Lewis led the team with three rebounds. Agwa had team-high nine rebounds as well.
 
Dylan Hayman scored 18 off the bench for the Cardinals.
