COMMERCE – Being down by as much as 14 in Saturday afternoon's game, the Texas A&M University-Commerce football team tied the game late at Ernest Hawkins Field, but the Lamar Cardinals spoiled the Lions' homecoming with a 29-20 win.

Luke Jackson (Bensalem, Pa.) drilled a 52-yard game-tying field goal with 1:55 left in the game, tying it at 20, but the Cardinals drove down, and Ben Woodard returned the favor with a 51-yard field goal on the other end to give the Cardinals the lead back with 11 seconds left.

On the final play of the game with the Lion offense on the field, attempting laterals to score, Lamar's Jaymond Jackson picked up a fumble and scored to make the final score 29-20.
The Lions fall to 1-6 on the season and are now 1-2 in Southland Conference play, while the Cardinals, who were receiving votes in both the AFCA and FCS Stats Perform poll, are 4-3 overall and 1-1 in SLC action. Saturday was homecoming for the Lions, who have lost two in a row on homecoming weekend, after having won the previous eight.
Both Jackson and Woodard kicked in field goals in the first quarter for a 3-3 tie after the first 15 minutes. Woordard's first field goal came from 46 yards out, while Jackson kicked it in from 30 yards out.
Robert Coleman rushed in a 10-yard touchdown and Devin Gibbs caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Coleman to put Lamar up 17-3 with 6:10 left in the first half.
The Lions answered with
Christian Jourdain (New Orleans, La.) catching a nine-yard touchdown pass from
Ron Peace (Malakoff), 50 seconds before halftime.

Jaden Proctor (Mexia) tied the game at 17 with a six-yard touchdown reception from Peace with 4:21 left in the third quarter.

With 6:13 left in the game, Woodard scored the first points for Lamar since the second quarter, kicking in a 37-yard field goal, which Jackson answered with 1:55 left in the game. Lamar blocked a field goal try for the Lions in the fourth quarter as well.
Peace was 22 for 38 in the game with 237 passing yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Jourdain hauled in eight catches for 136 yards to lead the team.
Kyree Anderson (Cy-Lakes) had team-best 14 tackles, while
Brandon Tucker (DeSoto) recorded 12.
Max Epps (Spring – Dekaney) forced a fumble, which was recovered by
Lavon Williams (San Antonio – Roosevelt).
