Horvath's overtime game-winner lifts Lion Women's Basketball over Texas Southern

HOUSTON – Cora Horvath was in the right place at the right time with 2.1 seconds left in Thursday evening's game in H&PE Arena as she put the East Texas A&M University women's basketball team ahead with a put-back jumper in the Lions' 87-86 overtime win over Texas Southern.
 
The Tigers scored the first six points of overtime in the first 59 seconds of the period, the Lions came right back to take a 83-81 lead on a 8-0 run. Both Jordyn Newsome (Irving – MacArthur) and Jasmine Payne (Birmingham, Ala.) hit three-pointers, while Cora Horvath (Oberwart, Austria) made two free throws during the run.
 
Texas Southern retook an 84-83 lead on a free throw with 1:05 left in overtime, Payne hit two free throws to put the Lions back in front. On the other end, Aylasia Fantroy put TSU in the lead with a layup.
 
The Lions got the ball with 25 seconds left and Payne had an open look for a go-ahead three-pointer, but it bounced off the rim right into the hands of Horvath, who gave the lead back to East Texas A&M with 2.1 seconds left. The win halts a two-game losing skid for the Lions, who are now 3-3 on the season, while Texas Southern drops to 0-4 this season.
 
Texas Southern started the game leading 25-10 in the first quarter, but the Lions scored the final five points of the quarter and came back to take a 40-39 lead in the final seconds of the first half.
 
In the third quarter, East Texas A&M built an 11-point lead, but back came Texas Southern to take a 73-72 lead in the final minute of regulation. The Lions' Nykesha Sanders (Detroit, Mich.) went 1 for 2 at the line to tie the game. Both teams had a possession with the game tied at the end of regulation, but neither was able to pull ahead.
 
Horvath led the Lions with 25 points as well as six rebounds, and three assists, while Newsome totaled 24 points, three rebounds, and an assist. Payne had 18 points, six rebounds, one block, one steal, and an assist and Sanders picked up 13 points, five rebounds, and three assists.
 
Alva Hedrich (Muecke, Germany) led the team with seven rebounds. Courtlyn Loudermill had team-best 17 points for Texas Southern, who had 30 offensive rebounds in the game and 29 second-chance points.
