Three score in double digits, but Lions fall at UIW

SAN ANTONIO – The East Texas A&M University women's basketball team ended the calendar year of 2024 with a 76-55 loss to the UIW Cardinals on Friday afternoon at the McDermott Center.
 
The lead exchanged early in the game on Friday, but the Cardinals held a lead as big as 25 points in the game, leading for all but 30 seconds in the game. UIW scored the first points of the game, the Lions answered with a three-pointer, but the next six were scored by the Cardinals, who held the Lions to three points through the first 4:56 of the game.
 
Jordyn Newsome (Irving – MacArthur) led the Lions with 13 points, while Hannah Humphrey (Lamar Consolidated) added 12 off the bench, and Nykesha Sanders (Detroit, Mich.) scored 12 and had team-best five assists. Alva Hedrich (Muecke, Germany) had team-high six rebounds.
 
The Lions shot 37 percent in the game, with seven of the 17 made field goals coming from three-point range, and went 14 for 16 at the line. UIW shot 54 percent from the field and had the 37-18 edge in rebounding.
 
Raimi McCrary was the leading scorer for UIW with 16 rebounds and recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds. UIW is now 3-0 against East Texas A&M in San Antonio over the last three years and the Lions are 3-1 in all games away from the McDermott Center during the stretch.
 
The Lions have lost five in a row and are now 0-2 in Southland Conference play, the first 0-2 start to conference play since 2011-12. UIW is 6-4 overall and 2-0 against SLC opponents.
