ABILENE – Non-conference play ended with a 74-59 loss for the East Texas A&M University women's basketball team to Abilene Christian on Saturday afternoon at Wessel Court.
The Lions end non-conference play with a record of 3-6, having lost two in a row, while the Wildcats have won five in a row and are now 7-4 on the season.
Neither team scored a point in the first two points, both teams exchanged the first four points, but the next four were scored by Abilene Christian, who held onto the lead for the remainder of the game.
The Wildcats had a 13-5 lead at the 3:31 mark of the first, the Lions quickly got it within one possession on a 5-0 run and a three-pointer from
Cora Horvath (Oberwart, Austria). ACU ended the quarter scoring the final four points and the margin was not within one possession again.
The Lions outscored the Wildcats, 15-13, in the fourth quarter, but trailed by as much as 22 in the game. ACU shot 50 percent in the game, adding 50 points in the paint, while the Lions shot 31 percent and added 14 points in the paint. Eleven of the 19 made field goals in the game were from deep for East Texas A&M.
Jordyn Newsom (Irving – MacArthur) tallied 19 points to lead the team, going 6 for 6 at the line and 3 for 6 from deep. Horvath finished the game with 19 points, four assists, and four rebounds.
Alva Hedrich (Muecke, Germany) was the leading rebounder with eight, while
Nina Horvath (Oberwart, Austria) totaled eight points off the bench.
For the Wildcats, Peyton Hull scored 17 and Bella Earle added 16. ACU was 5 for 20 in three-point shooting.
