Lion Women's Basketball downed by Lamar

COMMERCE – The Texas A&M University-Commerce women's basketball team was downed 74-58 on Thursday night in the Field House by the Lamar Cardinals.
 
With the win in the Field House on Thursday and Southeastern's loss at UIW, Lamar clinched a share of the regular season Southland Conference title and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. The Cardinals are 21-5 overall and 15-1 in conference play.
 
A&M-Commerce has lost four in a row and is 11-15 overall and 6-10 in conference play. The Lions sit in eighth place in the conference standings with two games to play, while Nicholls, Northwestern State, and New Orleans are in a three-way tie for fifth, leading the Lions by one game.
 
The Lions won the opening-tip and wasted no time as Jordyn Newsome (Irving – MacArthur) drilled a quick-three pointer, but the Cardinals scored the next 10 over the next three minutes and did not trail again in the game.
 
Lamar had a 20-6 lead in the first quarter with 34 seconds left. Mia Deck (Frisco – Lone Star) added three free throws right before the buzzer to bring the Lions within 11 at the end of the first quarter. The Cardinals did not trail by less than four points at any point the rest of the game.
 
Newsome led the way with 18 points, hitting four three-pointers and added four rebounds, one block, and an assist as well. Deck scored 13 with one assist, one rebound, and one steal, while Ahmya Boyce (Newport News, Va.) totaled 11 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
 
Lamar had the 48-27 advantage in rebounding. Akasha Davis had a double-double by halftime and finished the game with 22 points and 16 rebounds, while Sabria Dean recorded 15 points, three steals, and four rebounds.
