UIW takes game one over Lion Softball in five

SAN ANTONIO – The Cardinals defended home turf with a 10-0 win in five innings on Friday afternoon at H-E-B Field against the Texas A&M University-Commerce softball team to begin the Easter Weekend series.

The Lions had the bases loaded in the top of the first, but stranded all three runners, while the Cardinals plated six in the first.

Ryleigh Mata was walked, Victoria Altamirano was hit by a pitch, and Jillian Guiterrez hit a bunt single in the infield. Mata scored on a wild pitch and the bases were loaded once again with Brittany Shaw drawing a walk.

Aaliyah Garcia was hit by a pitch to drive in Altamirano and Maddison Guillen singled to left, plating Guiterrez.

The first out was recorded in the inning for the Lions after two pitching changes on a shallow fly out to left. Jaisy Caceres drove in Shaw with a sacrifice fly to right, while Baylee Lemons doubled down the left field line, scoring Guillen and Garcia.

In the bottom of the first, there were two pitching changes, three hits, and six runs scored.

The Cardinals added three more runs in the second. Guiterrez singled to left center and Shaw drew another walk, this time, being pinch run for by Marissa Espinoza. Garcia tripled to center, plating both Guiterrez and Espinoza and she scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Guillen.

Altamirano led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run to straight center for the 10th run of the game.

The Lions had just two hits in the game, both coming in the first, and left five runners on base. Tatum Wright (Frisco – Centennial) and Brooke Hilton (Plano Senior) had a hit each in the game.

Guiterrez went 2 for 2 in the game as did Guillen. Destiny Martinez (Denver, Colo.) allowed four earned runs without recording an out and took the loss, while Larissa Jacquez got the complete-game win. She allowed two hits and three walks.

The Cardinals improved to 18-10 overall and 5-5 in Southland action, while the Lions are 6-31 overall and 0-10 in conference play.
