COMMERCE – The Texas A&M University-Commerce softball team bested the UT Arlington Mavericks, 5-2, on Tuesday night at John Cain Family Softball Field, snapping a four-game losing streak.
The Lions are 7-33 on the season, while UT Arlington is now 14-21. This was the first meeting between the two programs.
The Mavericks had two runners on base with one out in the first, but the Lions were able to tag out a runner at home to keep the game scoreless and escaped the inning with a fly out to center.
In the bottom of the inning, the first two Lion batters got on base to put runners at the corner with no outs, but a pick-off play at third, a fly out, and a groundout ended the scoring threat for the Lions.
The lead-off batter in the top of the second reached on an infield single, but a line-out double play cleared the bases.
After the first two outs were recorded in the bottom of the third,
Tehya Pitts (Denton – Guyer) hit a bunt single to shortstop and
Diamond Sefe (Carson, Calif.) followed with a two-run home run to left center, her third of the season, to put the Lions up front.
A walk and a single gave the Lions runners at the corners, but UTA ended the inning with a groundout.
Cameron Cooper bunted to the pitcher with an out in the fourth. She reached first safely and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Lions. Nicole Hill singled to third on a bunt. The Lions challenged the safe call at first, but the call was upheld, and Camille Corona doubled to center, plating both Hill and Cooper to tie the game.
The Lions re-took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Kasey Kuyrkendall (Royse City) drew a walk. After a line out to first,
Ashley Diaz (Chino, Calif.) reached on a fielder's choice as UTA took the force out of Kuyrkendall at first.
Isabella Arzola (Chino, Calif.) singled through the left side and Pitts singled to short, loading the bases. After a Maverick pitching change, Diaz scored on a wild pitch, while Arzola also came around to score on the play due to a throwing error and Pitts advanced to third, scoring on an RBI single through the left side by Sefe.
The Lions ended the game on a 6-4-3 double play.
DOUBLE PLAY HIGHLIGHT
The Mavericks left nine runners on base with Lindsey Franklin going 2 for 2 with a walk. For the Lions, Pitts went 2 for 4 and Sefe went 3 for 4, totaling three RBIs.
Emilie Hoelscher took the loss for the Mavericks, allowing three earned runs in 0.2 innings. Jade Moreno started the game and allowed two earned runs in three innings.
The winning pitcher for the Lions was
Julia Sanchez (The Kinkaid School), she started the game and pitched four innings, allowing two earned runs.
Anissa Arredondo (San Antonio – Warren), threw three shutout innings in relief, striking out three.
