COMMERCE – Despite a ferocious come back to rebound from an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter, the East Texas A&M University women's basketball team suffered a 66-62 set back to the New Orleans Privateers in overtime on Saturday afternoon at the Hunt Regional Healthcare Court in the Field House.
The Lions trailed 43-35 with 8:53 left in the fourth quarter, but battled back to tie the game at 45 with 5:55 to play. The Privateers led by two entering the final 30 seconds of the fourth quarter, but went 2 for 4 at the line, as the Lions tied the game with 15 seconds to play on a layup by
Jordyn Newsome (Irving – MacArthur).

The Privateers had two shots on its final possession, but could not get the shot in. It marked the second straight game between the two teams that went into overtime.
With the game tied at 61 with 1:13 left in the game, the Privateers scored five of the final six points of the game, the Lions had one turnover and a missed field goal during the stretch and went 1 for 2 at the line, trailing by two at the time.
The Privateers picked up the first win of the season, improving to 1-15 on the season and 1-6 in Southland Conference play, while the Lions fall to 4-12 overall and 1-6 in SLC play. East Texas A&M moves to 1-1 in overtime games this season.
Both teams had a lead as big as four in the first quarter. UNO built a lead as big as eight in the second quarter, but the Lions came all the way back to tie the game at 24 with 7:12 left in the third quarter. The Privateers used an 11-0 lead with the game tied at 26 to build a cushion and entered the fourth leading by six as Newsome beat the buzzer with a layup.
Cora Horvath (Oberwart, Austria) led the way with 19 points as well as seven rebounds, while Newsome had 13 points and four rebounds, and
Nina Horvath (Oberwart, Austria) added 14 points off the bench.
Alva Hedrich (Muecke, Germany) recorded three points and 12 rebounds.
For the Privateers, Alexis Calderon scored 15, while Jayla Kimbrough recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
The Lions outscored shot 69.2 percent in the fourth quarter, but 34.3 percent overall in the game and went 12 for 20 at the line.
