Newsome's 20 points not enough in loss at Lamar

BEAUMONT – Jordyn Newsome scored 20 points for the East Texas A&M University women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon at Neches Arena, but the Lamar Cardinals remained undefeated in conference play with an 83-65 win.
 
The two teams exchanged the lead in the early going with the Lions leading by as much as four at the 5:22 mark of the first quarter, but Lamar scored the next eight, and though the Lions fought back to tie the game at 16, they did not lead again in the game.
 
Lamar led 24-16 after the first quarter, but the Lions stayed within reach in the second quarter as well, outscoring the Cardinals, 16-15 in the second. The Cardinals came into the game leading the conference and being third in the country in three-point percentage, but shot just 1 for 7 in the first half. Newsome (Irving – MacArthur) totaled 13 points in the first half.
 
The Lions shot 60 percent in the third quarter, but the Cardinals scored 26 in the third to lead by 12 entering the fourth. Akasha Davis finished the game with 16 points and 16 rebounds.
 
Lamar outrebounded East Texas A&M, 40-33 and had the 19-6 advantage in second-chance points. Along with 16 points from Davis, Sabria Dean added 23, while Jacei Denley scored 17, and NJ Weems added 12.  
 
For the Lions, Newsome shot 8 for 17 from the field, going 4 for 8 from the outside for his 20 points, and added five rebounds and four assists as well. Jasmine Payne (Birmingham, Ala.) came off the bench and scored 14, while Cora Horvath (Oberwart, Austria) tallied team-best six rebounds and five assists, as well as 10 points.
 
The Lions fall to 1-7 in Southland Conference and 4-13 overall, while the Cardinals are 13-4 overall, 8-0 in conference play, and 8-0 at home.
