COMMERCE – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders outscored the East Texas A&M University women's basketball team, 35-15, in the second half, to pick up a 55-45 win on Thursday night at the Hunt Regional Healthcare Court in the Field House.
The lead was exchanged just once in the game, as the Lions' largest lead was 14 points and they had the lead for 28:53 of gameplay, while the Islanders took their first lead of the game with 8:03 left in the game.
The Lions scored the first four points of the game, but the Islanders answered to tie the game at four with 6:40 left in the first. East Texas A&M ended the first quarter on a 14-4 run to lead by 10 at the end of the first. The Lions extended their lead to 28-14 at the 3:22 mark of the second, their largest of the game.
A&M-Corpus Christi scored six of the final eight points of the second quarter to trail 30-20 at the half. Both teams shot below 30 percent in the first half. The Islanders had 11 turnovers in the half, while the Lions had four. East Texas A&M finished the game with 15 turnovers, while A&M-Corpus Christi had 17.
The Islanders held the Lions to just four points in the final nine minutes of the third quarter as they cut the deficit down to two points entering the fourth quarter. The Lions shot 3 for 12 from the field in the quarter.
After the game was tied at 38 with 7:45 to play, the Islanders scored the next seven to jump ahead and the margin was never within one possession the rest of the game.
The Lions have lost seven in a row for the first time in the Division I era and fall to 4-15 overall and 1-9 in Southland Conference. The Islanders, who played in the NCAA Tournament a year ago, improve to 11-10 overall and 3-7 in Southland play.
A&M-Corpus Christi is now 7-0 all-time against East Texas A&M and the two teams do not face off against each other the rest of the regular season.
Cora Horvath (Oberwart, Austria) scored 17 points to lead the way for the Lions, shooting 5 for 10 from three-point range, while
Jordyn Newsome (Irving – MacArthur) added 12 points. Horvath was also the team leader in rebounds with seven and
Nykesha Sanders (Detroit, Mich.) had team-best six assists.
For the Islanders, Samora Watson led the way with 16 points, coming off the bench, and recorded a double-double with 14 rebounds as well. Paige Allen scored 10.
At the line, the Islanders went 17 for 21 in the game, while the Lions went 4 for 4. A&M-Corpus Christi outrebounded, East Texas A&M, 48-35.
