LAKE CHARLES, La. – A 7-0 run to start the game helped the McNeese Cowgirls roll to a 71-45 win over the East Texas A&M University women's basketball team on Friday night at the Townsley Law Arena.
The Cowgirls forced 29 turnovers and scored 35 points off those turnovers in their first ever win over the Lions in Lake Charles. McNeese is now 7-3 overall and 1-0 in Southland Conference play, while East Texas A&M falls to 3-5 overall and 0-2 against Southland opponents.
East Texas A&M was held to just two points through the first 4:26 of the game, but restricted McNeese to score just nine during that stretch. The Cowgirls held a 15-5 lead at the 2:33 mark of the first quarter, but the Lions closed it on a 7-2 run to cut it to 20-15 at the end of the first.
Southeastern had a lead as big as 26 in the game and did not allow a point for the final 3:22 of the game, scoring the final six points of the game. The Lions shot 47.6 percent from the field in the first half, but just 30.4 percent in the second half, shooting 17 for 44 in the game. McNeese took 25 more shots, going 29 for 69 form the field.
Reza Po (San Bruno, Calif.) led the way with 17 points for the Lions, shooting 6 for 12 from the field, while
Nina Horvath (Oberwart, Austria) added 10 points off the bench.
Nyaluak Dak (Lincoln, Neb.) had team-best five rebounds, while
Cora Horvath (Oberwart, Austria) totaled team-high four assists.
For the Cowgirls, Lexi Alexander scored 19 points along with 11 rebounds, while Dakota Howard added 20 points, and Tyreona Sibley scored 14 points off the bench.
