COMMERCE – Cora Horvath and
Tiani Ellison scored 21 points each on Monday morning as the East Texas A&M University women's basketball team collected a 76-60 win over the Texas Southern Lady Tigers on Hunt Regional Healthcare Court at the Field House.
Monday was the Education Day game presented by Signature Solar with over 1,600 kids from neighboring independent school districts in attendance.
With the win, the Lions snapped a two-game losing streak and improve to 4-5 overall, while the Lady Tigers fall to 3-6 and lost to the Lions for the second year in a row. Monday was the final non-conference games for the Lions, who went 4-3 against non-conference opponents this season.
Despite trailing by as much as six in the first quarter, the Lady Tigers came back to tie the game at 13 with 44 seconds left in the quarter. The Lions entered the second quarter leading 15-13 and outscored the Lady Tigers 23-9, shooting 56 percent from the field and 4 for 7 from deep.
The Lions scored the final seven points of the quarter, including a buzzer-beater from
Cora Horvath (Oberwart, Austria) to lead 38-22 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Lions extended their lead to 47-28 at the 5:42 mark but the Lady Tigers got it down to within seven towards the end of the quarter and made it a 56-51 game at the 8:34 mark of the fourth quarter.
Ellison (Durant, Okla.) scored the next six points to extend the lead back up to double digits for the Lions. She nearly had a double-double with 21 points and eight rebounds, while
Cora Horvath totaled 21 points, making five three-pointers, and added five rebounds as well as five assists.
Both
Ahmya Boyce (Newport News, Va.) and
Reza Po (San Bruno, Calif.) added 10 points each, with Po dishing out eight assists. For Texas Southern, Daeja Holmes scored 22 points off the bench and Aaliyah Henderson added 16, also off the bench.

The Lions are off for the next two weeks before resuming Southland Conference play against defending conference tournament champions, SFA, at home on December 29 at 4 p.m. The game is part of Family Fun Day presented by Northeast Texas Gellyball with all kids 12 and under receiving free admission.
