Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lions tame Ragin' Cajuns for first road win of the season

LAFAYETTE, La. – Three starters for the East Texas A&M University women's basketball team scored in double digits to power the Lions to a 72-47 win over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns on Tuesday morning at the Cajundome.

The win snaps a two-game losing skid for the Lions, who improve to 3-3 on the season, while the Ragin' Cajuns fall to 0-8 overall this season and 0-2 against Southland Conference teams. Tuesday was the first ever meeting between the two teams.

For East Texas A&M, it is just the third non-conference win on the road in the Division I era and first win over a Division I opponent this season.

The Lions never trailed in the game and there was just one tie to start, which came at 2-2. East Texas A&M then scored the next six and had a lead as big as eight in the first quarter, holding the Ragin' Cajuns to just eight points through the first 10 minutes.

Holding Louisiana to shoot 24.3 percent in the first half, the Lions had a 32-22 lead. East Texas A&M on the other hand, shot 43.3 percent from the field in the first half.

Coming out of halftime, the Ragin' Cajuns scored the first four points to trim the deficit down to six, but the Lions then scored the next 11 and held UL without a point for the next six minutes to take a 17-point lead.

Despite a 9-1 run by the Ragin' Cajuns to cut the deficit down to single digits, the Lions' Tiani Ellison (Durant, Okla.) scored the final four points of the third quarter to put the Lions ahead 50-37 entering the fourth quarter.

The largest lead in the game for the Lions was 27 points, and it came as part of a 14-1 run in the fourth quarter.

Reza Po (San Bruno, Calif.) totaled 20 points for the Lions, along with three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. She shot 7 for 11 from the field and 4 for 5 from deep. Both Ellison and Cora Horvath (Oberwart, Austria) added 18 points each.

Horvath posted nine rebounds and seven assists, while Ellison added seven rebounds. Ahmya Boyce (Newport News, Va.) tacked on nine points and four assists.

For Louisiana, Amijah Price led the way with 18 points.
