COMMERCE – The East Texas A&M University softball team ended the Lion Invitational on Sunday with losses to Rutgers by a score of 4-2 and Abilene Christian by a score of 8-0 in five innings at the John Cain Family Field.
The Lions have lost six in a row and fall to 2-8 on the season, while the Scarlet Knights went 4-1 in Commerce this weekend to move to 5-5 on the season and the Wildcats picked up their first win of the season, improving to 1-9.
Game One: RUTGERS 4, EAST TEXAS A&M 2
The two teams combined to put just one runner on base through the first two and a half innings of the game until a leadoff double to right from
Hailey Montemayor (Lubbock – Monterey) in the third. Following two strikeouts, Montemayor came around to score on an RBI single up the middle by
Emma Rodrigues (Little Elm – John Paul II).

All four runs for the Scarlet Knights came in the sixth as eight batters came to plate in the inning. LA Matthews drew a one-out walk and was pinch run for by Riley Hwang. Baileigh Burtis singled up the middle and Georgia Ingle drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases, being pinch run for by Kelsey Riggan.
Following a Lion pitching change, Bailey Briggs drove in two on a base hit to center. Both Briggs and Riggan advanced a base on a wild pitch strikeout and Riggan scored on another wild pitch. Gaelen Kelly drew a walk, and Briggs stole home as Rutgers attempted a double steal with Briggs scoring before Kelly was tagged out to end the inning.
Tatum Wright (Frisco – Centennial) doubled to center with an out in the bottom of the sixth and was pinch run for by Bella Arzola (Chino, Calif.), who came around to score on a one-run double to left by
Emmie Miehe (Cameron Park, Calif.).
EMMIE MIEHE RBI DOUBLE HIGHLIGHT
Miehe went 2 for 3 in the game for the Lions and Burtis had two of the three hits for Rutgers. Ella Harrison tossed a complete game for the Scarlet Knights, striking out nine and allowing two earned runs.
Julia Sanchez (The Kinkaid School) surrendered three earned runs in 5.1 innings for the loss. She struck out six and allowed just two hits, but walked four and hit one batter.
Game Two: ABILENE CHRISTIAN 8, EAST TEXAS A&M 0 (Five Innings)
In the top of the first, Audrey Lacina hit a one-out double to right center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Following a walk by Elizabeth Schaefer, who then stole second, Rachel Cook drove in Lacina with an RBI ground out and Catrin Hoffman plated Schaefer with a one-run base hit to right center.
Schaefer singled up the middle with two outs in the third and Cook was hit by pitch to put two runners on. Hoffman doubled to left center, bringing home both Cook and Schaefer.
Emalee Romero led off the fourth with a single down the right field line and Valerie Ornelas reached on a fielding error with Roo Stone coming in as pinch runner for Romero. Following a double steal, Julianna Martinez drove in Stone on an RBI groundout.
In the fifth, Schaefer singled up the middle and Cook drew a walk. After a flyout, Taylor Bachmeyer singled up the middle to load the bases. Following an infield popout, Ornelas was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Chase Mueller came in as a pinch hitter and singled up the middle to plate Cook.
The Lions made a pitching change and then Isabel Martinez entered the game as a pinch hitter and drew a four-pitch walk. The Wildcats batted around in the inning.
East Texas A&M had just two baserunners in the game with
Maddie Cason (Honey Grove) recording a base hit in the fourth and
Stephanie Tapia (Yuma, Ariz.) drawing a walk in the fifth.
Both Schaefer and Hoffman had two hits each in the game and Lina Russo collected a five-inning shutout win with six strikeouts.
Maddie Muller (Frisco – Memorial) started the game and got the loss for the Lions, allowing four earned runs in 2.2 innings.
Over the last two seasons, ACU is now 4-0 against East Texas A&M with all four wins coming in Commerce.
UP NEXT
The Lions are scheduled to host North Dakota at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. The game against Wichita State on Wednesday has been canceled.
