THIBODAUX, La. – For the first time this season, the East Texas A&M University women's basketball team has won back-to-back games after downing Nicholls 67-53 on Saturday afternoon at Stopher Gymnasium.
The Lions improve to 6-16 overall and 3-10 in Southland Conference play, now being in a four-way tie for eighth place. Two of the three wins in conference play for the Lions have come against Nicholls, who is now 15-8 on the season and 8-6 in conference action. The Lions are 5-1 against the Colonels over the last three seasons.
The first five points and eight of the first nine points were scored by the Lions, but Nicholls closed out the first quarter on a 9-0 run to lead 13-10 after the first quarter.
The Lions started the second quarter on a 10-0 run to jump back ahead 20-13 at the seven-minute mark, matching their largest lead of the game to that point. East Texas A&M outscored Nicholls, 23-10, in the third and had a lead as big as 13.
Despite the Colonels outscoring the Lions, 21-19, in the third, Nicholls was not able to cut the Lion lead any further down then seven points. The Lions extended their lead to as big as 19 with 1:20 to play in the game.
Jordyn Newsome (Irving – MacArthur) shot 7 for 9 from the field for team-high 19 points, while
Cora Horvath (Oberwart, Austria) added 12 and
Nina Horvath (Oberwart, Austria) added 11. Off the bench,
Jamy De Kock (Woudrichem, The Netherlands) scored 10. Both
Alva Hedrich (Muecke, Germany) and
Trinity Moreland (Charlotte, N.C.) grabbed eight rebounds each.
The Lions shot 49 percent from the field, 7 for 15 from outside, and 10 for 15 at the line. East Texas A&M had the 35-31 advantage in rebounding, while the Colonels shot 35.8 percent. Britiya Curtis scored 19 points to lead the Colonels.
