Lion Softball suffers losses to Roos, Jayhawks

NORMAN, Okla. – The East Texas A&M University suffered two five-inning losses on Saturday at Love's Field at the hands of Kansas City, 12-3, and the Kansas Jayhawks, 23-0.
 
The Lions fall to 4-15 on the season, while Kansas is 9-6 and Kansas City is 1-11.
 
Game One: KANSAS CITY 12, EAST TEXAS A&M 3 (Five Innings)
The Roos plated six in the second inning on five hits as eight batters came to the plate in the inning. Katie Noble singled, and both Katelyn Maciel and Elleana Navarro drew a walk to load the bases with no outs.
 
Grace Batdorf cleared the bases with a three-run double to center. Following a Lion pitching change, Batdorf advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a ground out, Lauren Parker reached on a fielder's choice and Gianna Lickel drove in Batdorf with a bunt single to the pitcher.
 
Kendyl Anderson singled to the shortstop to load the bases once again and Derika Castillo hit a two-run double to right center, but the Lions tagged out Castillo at second on the play to end the inning.
 
In the top of the third after two outs, Emma Rodrigues (Little Elm – John Paul II) homered to left, her third of the season. Maddie Cason (Honey Grove) tripled to left center and came around to score on a two-run home run to left center by Charli Anger (Lubbock – Cooper), her second of the season.
 
The Lions continued the inning with a four-pitch walk by Stephanie Tapia (Yuma, Ariz.), who advanced to third on a single by Tatum Wright (Frisco – Centennial) but was tagged out at home to end the inning.
 
The Roos added two more in the third as Noble scored on an RBI single by Taylor Kvale and Parker drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Maciel. Navarro singled through the left side to bring in a run in the fourth, while Kvale and Payton Schnoor drew bases-loaded walks in the inning.
 
Both Noble and Batdorf had two hits each in the game for Kansas City, while Maddy Duvall allowed three earned runs, but moved to 1-4 in the circle with the win, tossing three innings.
 
For the Lions, Anger went 2 for 3 in the game and Kate Houser (Lorena) got the loss, allowing four earned runs in two innings.
 
Game Two: KANSAS 23, EAST TEXAS A&M 0 (Five Innings)
Presley Limbaugh led off the game with a walk and stole second, Aynslee Linduff was hit by a pitch, and Hailey Cripe singled to right to load the bases with no outs in the top of the first. After a strikeout, everyone came around to score on a grand slam to left field by Ava Wallace.
 
Wallace had two home runs in the game, the other being a three-run home run in the second. Emma Tatum also added a two-run home run in the second, while Kadence Stafford hit a three-run home run in the third, and Haley Webb hit a two-run home run in the second.
 
The Lions had just two hits in the game, one from Wright and another from Nevaeh Terrell (Pennsauken, N.J.). Julia Sanchez (The Kinkaid School) was charged with eight earned runs in 2.1 innings for the loss.
 
Kennedy Diggs got the win for the Jayhawks, tossing five shutout innings. She allowed two hits and struck out nine.
 
UP NEXT
The Lions close out the Oklahoma Omni Classic at 11 a.m. on Sunday against Kansas City at the historic Marita Hynes Field.
