COMMERCE – On Senior Day at the John Cain Family Softball Complex, the East Texas A&M University softball team fell by scores of 7-3 and 8-7 on Saturday evening to the Nicholls Colonels.
SENIOR DAY
Prior to the games on Saturday, the Lions honored their six graduating seniors as well as student manager Cody Smith. The seniors for the Lions that were honored on Saturday were
Maddie Cason (Honey Grove),
Darby Hickey (Plano Senior),
Kate Houser (Lorena),
Kasey Kuyrkendall (Royse City),
Julia Sanchez (The Kinkaid School), and
Stephanie Tapia (Yuma, Ariz.).
Game One: NICHOLLS 7, EAST TEXAS A&M 3
With an out in the top of the second, Riley Rutherford singled to right center. After another strikeout, Laylin Sturm doubled to center, plating Rutherford, while Sturm scored on a triple to right center by Claire Sisco. Erin Krause plated Sisco with a single to left.
Aaliyah Wilcox (Covington, Ga.) doubled to center with an out in the bottom of the second and she came around to score on a two-run home run to right by Tapia.
STEPHANIE TAPIA HOME RUN HIGHLIGHT
Rutherford walked to lead off the fourth and she advanced to second on a single up the middle by Carmella Muccilli. Both runners advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by Sturm and Sisco plated Rutherford with a sacrifice fly to center.
Wilcox reached on a throwing error to lead off the fourth and advanced to second on the play. She was pinch run for by Kuyrkendall, who scored on a single to right by Tapia.
In the top of the fifth, Molly VandenBout reached on a throwing error and went to third on a double down the right field line by Brynne Songy. Lillanna Robledo brought home VandenBout with a sacrifice fly to right.
Sisco singled to right with an out in the sixth. She stole second and scored on a one-run single by Krause, who advanced to second on the throw, and scored on a single to right by Reagan Heflin.
The Lions left seven runners on base in the game and the Colonels left eight. Both
Emma Rodrigues (Little Elm – John Paul II) and Tapia had two hits in the game, while Sisco and Krause both went 3 for 4 in the game.
Houser allowed four earned runs in four innings to get the loss, while Molly Yoo picked up the win, surrendering two earned runs in the complete game win.
Game Two: NICHOLLS 8, EAST TEXAS A&M 7
Sisco and Krause hit back-to-back singles to start off the game and both advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by Heflin. Songy plated Sisco, while Krause stole home to make it 2-0 in the top of the first.
Muccilli was hit by a pitch, Sturm singled to left center, and Sisco singled to the pitcher to load the bases with no outs in the second. Krause plated both Sturm and Muccilli on a single up the middle.
In the third, Robledo doubled to right center to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI ground out hit by Muccilli.
Wilcox drew a walk with two outs in the third and once again scored on a two-run home run to right by Tapia, her second of the day and seventh of the season.
STEPHANIE TAPIA HOME RUN HIGHLIGHT
Cason singled to the pitcher with no outs in the fourth and came around to score on the play thanks to a Nicholls throwing error. Rodrigues tripled to right center on the next pitch and scored on an RBI ground out by
Emmie Miehe (Cameron Park, Calif.), bringing the Lions within one.
Ally Mooneyham singled to shortstop and stole second to lead off the sixth. She advanced to third on a strikeout and scored on a one-run single by Sisco, who stole second, and scored on a single by Krause and she advanced to second on the throw. Heflin doubled to left center, plating Krause.
In the bottom of the seventh, Wilcox drew another leadoff walk and Tapia followed with a four-pitch walk. Hickey came in as a pinch hitter and doubled to right, plating Wilcox.
Charli Anger (Lubbock – Cooper) returned into the game for Hickey and Cason singled to the pitcher, as the Colonels tagged out Tapia at home.
After a strikeout, both Cason and Anger scored on an infield two-run single by Miehe. Both teams left seven runners on base in the game.
Tapia went 2 for 2 in the game, while both Cason and Miehe went 2 for 4 in the game. Sisco went 3 for 4 for Nicholls and Krause went 3 for 3.
Maddie Muller (Frisco – Memorial) allowed eight earned runs in 5.1 innings and got the loss. VandenBout tossed five innings to start the game for the Colonels, allowing four earned runs, and got the win. Yoo tossed the seventh inning and got the save.
