Lawless-Felarca's two strikes earn Lions a draw at Lamar

BEAUMONT – Alana Lawless-Felarca scored twice in less than two minutes to help the East Texas A&M University soccer team earn a 2-2 draw at Lamar on Thursday night to begin Southland Conference play.

After no goals through the first 58 minutes of the match, the Cardinals tallied two goals to lead 2-0 in the 66th minute. Lawless-Felarca (Dallas – Richardson) answered with a pair of goals to tie it at two.

The Lions start Southland Conference play with an 0-0-1 record for the second straight year and are now 3-5-1 on the season, while Lamar is 3-4-2 overall. The last two meetings between the two teams in Beaumont have been 2-2 ties.

"It's a great result on the road against a conference opponent. Going down 2-0 was disappointing but our response was fantastic," said coach Ashley Gordon
"I am excited for Alana, scoring two goals out of midfield."

Marissa Gross scored the first goal of the night for the Cardinals off a corner kick, being assisted by Kam Jalayer and Sydney Williams.

In the 66th minute, Anneliese Switzer scored off an assist from Jalayer to put Lamar up two.

The first goal for the Lions came off a free kick from Malaya Ring (Dana Point, Calif.), which was headed in by Lawless Felarca. In the 69th minute, a long free kick from Ring was deflected towards Lawless-Felarca, who drilled in the match-tying goal.

Lamar had the 18-12 shot advantage, with both teams landing seven shots on goal. The Cardinals had nine corner kicks compared to just one for the Lions.

Both goalkeepers recorded 90 minutes in goal with Gillian McKenzie (Mesquite Horn) totaling four saves, while Lamar's Eloise Bywater had five saves.
