COMMERCE – An 8-0 run in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter boosted the UT Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros to pick up a 60-55 win over the East Texas A&M University women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon at the Hunt Regional Healthcare Court in the Field House.
The win by the Vaqueros snapped a two-game winning streak for the Lions, who fall to 7-7 on the season and 3-4 in Southland Conference play. UTRGV now moves to 2-0 all-time against East Texas A&M and improves to 8-8 overall as well as 5-2 in conference action this season.
Scoring 11 of the first 13 points of the game, the Vaqueros had the early lead, but the Lions used an 8-0 run towards the end of the first quarter to take a 17-16 lead, making three-pointers in back-to-back possessions during the stretch. The Vaqueros halted the run with a free throw, tying the game at 17 at the end of the first.
The lead exchanged hands through the second quarter, with neither side holding a lead bigger than three in the quarter. There were a total of three lead changes and four ties in the second quarter.
The Lions held UTRGV without a point for a stretch of four minutes in the third quarter, while building a 38-34 lead, their largest of the game. The Vaqueros closed the third quarter on a 7-1 run in the final 3:52 to take a 41-40 lead entering the fourth quarter.
With 2:37 left in the game, the Lions scored three points in a row to take a 51-49 lead, but the Vaqueros' Jalayah Ingram scored eight straight points to put the Vaqueros up 57-51. The Lions were held scoreless for a stretch of two minutes.
Ingram led all scorers with 29 points as she shot 9 for 18 from the field and 11 for 12 at the line. She was the lone Vaquero to reach double digits.
For the Lions,
Tiani Ellison (Durant, Okla.) nearly totaled her second double-double in as many as games as she finished the game with 21 points and nine rebounds.
Ahmya Boyce (Newport News, Va.) added 13 points along with five rebounds.
