HOUSTON – The Houston Christian Huskies closed Saturday afternoon's game on a 15-1 run to take a 65-52 win over the East Texas A&M University women's basketball team at Sharp Gym.
Knocking down six of their first nine shots of the game, the Lions got off to a 13-3 start through the first 4:15 of the game. The Huskies held the Lions to just two minutes the rest of the quarter and cut the deficit down to five at the end of the quarter.
The lack of offensive production continued into the second quarter for East Texas A&M with the Huskies starting the period on a 4-1 run through the first two minutes and then grabbing a 24-23 lead at the 3:34 mark as part of a 5-0 run.
The Lions did not allow a point for the rest of the quarter and scored the final three points of the quarter to hold a 26-24 lead at the half.
Tiani Ellison (Durant, Okla.) and
Ahmya Boyce (Newport News, Va.) combined for 21 of the team's 26 points in the first half with 12 and nine, respectively.
After the Lions scored the first four points of the third quarter to go back up by six, the Huskies held the Lions to just two points for the next six minutes, while taking a 39-32 lead, their largest of the game to that point. HCU led 43-30 entering the fourth.
Five points in a row by East Texas A&M in a span of one minute pulled them ahead 51-50 with 6:12 left, the first lead for the Lions since the 4:32 mark of the third quarter. The Lions scored just one point for the rest of the game as the Huskies ended the game on a 15-1 run.
It is the third loss in a row for the Lions, who fall to 7-9 on the season and 3-6 in Southland Conference action. The Huskies improve to 5-11 overall, 3-6 in SLC action, snap a seven-game losing streak, and are now 2-0 against the Lions in Sharp Gym over the last two seasons.
Ellison fouled out of the game with 3:47 left in the game. She finished the game with 23 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks. Boyce tallied 10 points as well as three rebounds.
For the Huskies, Kamryn McLaurin had team-best 18 points off the bench. HCU shot 14 for 26 in the second half and 23 for 59 in the game. The Huskies went 7 for 20 from deep and 12 for 13 at the line, while the Lions went 3 for 12 from three-point range and 7 for 12 at the line.
