NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Northwestern State Lady Demons led wire-to-wire on Monday afternoon to beat the East Texas A&M University women's basketball team 60-51 at the Prather Coliseum.
The Lions have now lost back-to-back game and fall to 12-12 overall and 8-9 in conference play, while the Lady Demons remained perfect all time in Natchitoches over the Lions and improve to 13-12 overall and 10-7 against Southland opponents.
The two teams split the season series this year. With five games left in the regular season, the Lions are now tied for seventh place with Nicholls, who they already beat once this season and play again in the regular season finale, while the Lady Demons take sole possession of fifth place.
The Lions can clinch their spot into the eight-team conference tournament by winning both games at home this weekend.
On Monday, Northwestern State scored the first two points of the game. The Lions answered on the other end, but the Lady Demons then went on a 6-0 run, and the Lions came within one possession just once the rest of the game and that was with the first two points of the second quarter.
The Lady Demons had a lead as big as 13 in the game with Vernell Atamah scoring 18 points, followed by 17 from Tiara Abron and 10 from Nya Valentine.
Tiani Ellison (Durant, Okla.) led all scorers with 21 points and eight rebounds in the game, but was the only Lion to score in double digits. East Texas A&M shot 28 percent from the field and 3 for 16 from deep.
