HCU downs Lion Women's Basketball

COMMERCE – The Houston Christian Huskies picked up their first ever win on the Hunt Regional Healthcare Court at the Field House on Thursday evening, downing the East Texas A&M University women's basketball team, 71-53.

The Lions have lost three in a row and now hold a record of 12-13 overall and 8-10 in Southland Conference play. HCU is 8-17 overall, 6-12 in conference play, and went 2-0 against East Texas A&M this season.

With four games left in the regular season, the Lions have a two-game lead over the Huskies for the final spot in the eight-team conference tournament, though the Huskies now hold the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The Huskies scored the first eight points of the game as the Lions' first bucket did not come until the 4:52 mark of the first quarter. Six points in a row from Reza Po (San Bruno, Calif.), including an and-one, got the Lions within 13-11, but the Huskies answered with a basket on the other end.

In the second quarter, the Lions came back within two points on a 4-0 run, but were then held scoreless for the next five minutes as a 10-0 run by the Huskies put them ahead 29-17, their largest lead of the game to that point.

Despite holding the Huskies scoreless for the final four minutes of the first half, the Lions did not trim the deficit any lower than eight points, trailing 29-21 at the break.

The Huskies extended their lead in the second half as they scored 20 of the first 25 points of the period. The Lions started the quarter shooting 2 for 12 from the field.

The largest lead in the game for the Huskies was 25 points, with East Texas A&M scoring the final seven points of the game.

Po totaled 16 points and two rebounds, with Nina Horvath (Oberwart, Austria) scoring 10 along with five rebounds.

For the Huskies, Grace Booth led the way with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Jordan Jackson scored 11 and Jo Oly added 10 off the bench.
