FULLERTON, Calif. – The No. 4/5 ranked Florida Gators used a 17-run first inning to pull away from the East Texas A&M University softball team to begin the Judi Garman Classic with a 28-0 win on Thursday night at the Anderson Family Field.
Florida came into the week being ranked either No. 4 or 5 by most major polls and is now the first time in NCAA Division I this season to reach 20 wins, being 21-0. The Lions fall to 5-13.
The Gators scored 17 runs in the first inning on 14 hits, while leaving two on base. Both Cassidy McLellan and Taylor Shumaker had three-run home runs in the inning. Jocelyn Erickson added a grand slam in the second.
Shumaker drove in eight runs in the game, while McLellan drove in five.
For the Lions, Isabella Arzola (Chino, Calif.), Hailey Montemayor (Lubbock – Cooper), and Layni Kimura (Westminster, Calif.) had a hit each in the game. Victoria Masters (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) got the loss, allowing six earned runs in 0.1 innings.
Avery Rohlman (Littleton, Colo.) allowed five earned runs in 3.2 innings of relief. The Gators used four pitchers in the game with Leah Stevens getting the win, starting the game with a shutout first inning.
