Lion Softball falls to No. 8/9 Bruins, Beavers at Judi Garman Classic

FULLERTON, Calif. – Despite scoring seven runs in the nightcap, the East Texas A&M University softball team dropped a pair of run-rule decisions on Friday at the Anderson Family Classic via scores of 14-0 and 18-7 to No. 8/9 ranked UCLA and Oregon State as part of the Judi Garman Classic.
 
UCLA is ranked either No. 8 or 9 in most major polls coming into this weekend and appeared in the Women's College World Series last season. The Lions are now 5-15 following the two losses.  
 
GAME 1: UCLA 14, EAST TEXAS A&M 0 (Five Innings)
The Bruins scored five in the bottom of the first as Aleena Garcia drew a bases-loaded walk and Jolyna Lamar hit a grand slam.
 
In the second, Megan Grant added a two-run home run, while Garcia hit an RBI double, and Lamar hit a three-run home run.
 
Ramsey Suarez hit a two-run home run in the third and then Bri Alejandre hit a solo home run in the third.
 
Both Isabella Arzola (Chino, Calif.) and Layni Kimura (Westminster, Calif.) had a base hit each in the game. Maddie Muller (Frisco – Memorial) surrendered seven earned runs in one inning for the loss, while Victoria Masters (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) pitched the final three innings, allowing seven earned runs.
 
Sydney Somerndike started the game and threw three shutout innings for the win. She struck out three.
 
GAME 2: OREGON STATE 18, EAST TEXAS A&M 7 (Five Innings)
Five runs came around to score in the first for the Beavers as Morgan Howey and Genevieve Beacom hit two-run doubles each and Kaylie Stauffer drove in a run on a base hit to center.
 
Jaeya Butler hit a two-run home run in the second to put Oregon State up 7-0 entering the bottom of the second. The Lions stormed back to make it a two-run game by plating five in the inning.  
 
Tatum Wright (Frisco – Centennial) hit an RBI double down the left field line as Hailey Montemayor (Lubbock – Monterrey) scored, then Arzola plated Zoey Hipolito (Ontario, Calif.). KK Cosek (Helendale, Calif.) drove in Wright with a single through the left side.
 
Both Arzola and Cosek came around to score as Charli Anger (Lubbock – Cooper) reached on a fielding error by OSU.
 
In the top of the third, the Beavers responded with a grand slam by Tristian Thompson. Butler doubled to deep center to drive in a run in the fourth.
 
Camrynn Gordon, Tessa Hogue drove in a run each with a pair of singles, while Mya Harrison hit a two-run single and Morgan Howey drilled a two-run double for the Beavers in the fifth.
 
The Lions added two more in the bottom of the fifth with Aaliyah Wilcox (Covington, Ga.) driving in Anger with a double down the right field line and Hipolito singled through the left side as Wilcox came around to score.
 
Arzola, Wilcox, Montemayor, and Hipolito had two hits each in the game for the Lions. Madison Kloepper (Llano) was charged with three earned runs in one inning for the loss, while the Beavers' Bailey Murray tossed 3.1 innings in relief and got the win.
 
UP NEXT
The Lions take on Seattle at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Fullerton.
