COMMERCE – The East Texas A&M University women's basketball team increased its winning streak to four following a 61-52 win over Northwestern State at the Hunt Regional Healthcare Court on Saturday afternoon.
The Lions' four wins in a row have improved their record to 11-10 on the season and 7-7 in Southland Conference play, while the Lady Demons fall to 11-11 overall and 8-6 against Southland opponents. The two teams are set to play each other twice in a stretch of four games.
The four-game winning streak matches the four-game winning streak towards of the end of the 2023-24 season for the longest in the last three years. The longest winning streak in the Division I era is six games, which came during the 2022-23 season.
The first eight points of the game were scored by the Lions, and they trailed for just one possession the rest of the game. The Demons came within one in the final minute of the first quarter, but the Lions hit a three-pointer to lead by four entering the second.
The Lady Demons took their first lead of the game during a 6-0 run to start the second quarter. The Lions roared back by increasing their lead to 36-25 at the 1:08.
The Lions had a 36-27 lead at the half, and both teams had matching 14-14 totals in the third and 10-10 in the fourth.
Reza Po (San Bruno, Calif.) clocked in all 40 minutes while scoring 14 points and totaling seven rebounds.
Ahmya Boyce (Newport News, Va.) had 13 points.
Saturday was the first loss for Northwestern State to the Lions since the 2024 SLC Tournament. The Lady Demons were led in scoring by 19 points from Nya Valentine.
