AUSTIN – The No. 3/3 ranked University of Texas Longhorns took a 10-1 win in five innings via a walk-off grand slam over the East Texas A&M University softball team on Wednesday evening at the Red & Charline McCombs Field.
Texas, the defending national champion, is ranked on No. 3 in most national polls this week.
The first three batters of the game reached base safely for the Longhorns. Reese Atwood hit a sacrifice fly to left, plating the first runner of the game. The Lions kept the Longhorns adding any further runs with a strikeout and a fly out.
In the second, the Longhorns loaded the bases once again without an out recorded. A bases loaded walk drawn by Kayden Henry and Kaiah Altmeyer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tack on two more runs in the second for Texas.
A pair of hits and a walk loaded the bases in the third for the Longhorns with one out. Both Henry and Leighann Goode hit RBI base hits to add to the Longhorns' lead. Texas left the bases loaded in the inning.
Aaliyah Wilcox (Covington, Ga.) drew a lead-off walk in the top of the fourth and was pinch run for by
Jaylin Olguin (Fontana, Calif.). A groundout by
Charli Anger (Lubbock-Cooper) advanced Olguin to second and then an opposite-field base hit by
Hailey Montemayor (Lubbock – Monterey) drove in Olguin.
The Longhorns added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to deep right field by Katie Stewart, her 13
th of the season. In the fifth, the Longhorns had the bases loaded and Stewart hit a grand slam off the center field scoreboard on the first pitch to deliver the walk-off hit.
Along with Montemayor,
Layni Kimura (Westminster, Calif.) had a hit for the Lions. Wilcox,
Emma Rodrigues (Little Elm – John Paul II), and
Isabella Arzola (Chino, Calif.) drew a walk each in the game.
Maddie Muller (Frisco – Memorial) got the loss for the Lions, allowing two earned runs in one inning. Cambria Selmon got the win for the Longhorns, tossing three shutout innings.
Texas is 23-1 on the season with the win on Wednesday, having won 23 in a row. The Lions fall 5-22 with the loss.
UP NEXT
The Lions resume Southland Conference play on Friday at A&M-Corpus Christi. The doubleheader is set to begin at 3 p.m. on the island with the series finale on Saturday.
