COMMERCE – The Grambling State Tigers put together a five-run sixth inning on Tuesday afternoon to edge out the East Texas A&M University softball team by a score of 8-6 at the John Cain Family Softball Complex.
This was the second meeting between the two teams in Commerce this year with the two teams now having split the season series.
In the top of the Kamrynn Broussard doubled down the left field line to score Ashuante' Specks and Broussard scored on a double steal attempt as the Lions got the out at second.
The first three Lion batters got on base via base hits in the bottom of the first with
Aaliyah Wilcox (Covington, Ga.) driving in
Isabella Arzola (Frisco – Centennial) on an RBI groundout.
Tatum Wright (Frisco – Centennial) hit a two-run home run in the third to put the Lions in front with Arzola also coming around to score, but Specks hit a solo home run in the fifth to tie the game.
For the second time in the game, Wright hit another two-run home run, this time with
KK Cosek (Helendale, Calif.) on base. Wright now has team-best eight home runs on the season.
The Lions added another run in the fifth as
Charli Anger (Lubbock – Cooper) plated Wilcox on an RBI groundout.
Ziya Donaldson scored on a Lion throwing error to begin the sixth, while Tony Purchas scored on a passed ball, Specks hit an RBI single to plate Hailey Hughes, while Cadashia Collins hit a two-run double to right center.
Specks and Broussard, who batted 1-2 in the Tigers' lineup went 6 for 7 with three RBIs and five runs scored in the game. The top three batters in the Lion order, Cosek, Arzola, and Wright went 7 for 9, with five runs scored and four RBIs.
Layni Kimura (Westminster, Calif.) also went 2 for 4 in the game.
In the circle, Jaidan Richard got the win for the Tigers, allowing six earned runs in the complete-game win.
Madison Kloepper (Llano) was charged with seven earned runs in 5.1 innings for the loss.
The Lions have lost four in a row and are now 6-28 overall and the Tigers snapped an eight-game losing streak, being 8-18 on the season.
UP NEXT
The Lions resume Southland Conference play this weekend at Northwestern State. Friday's doubleheader is set for a 4 p.m. start.
