Lion Softball falls twice to Demons to begin series

NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Northwestern State Demons won via scores of 12-7 and 12-2 over the East Texas A&M University softball team on Friday evening at the Demon Diamond to take the series.
 
GAME 1: NORTHWESTERN STATE 12, EAST TEXAS A&M 7
Three runs came around to score in the first for the Demons as Riley Schwisow, Peyton Young, and Sister Arnold had an RBI base hit each in the inning. Young added a solo home run; Arnold hit a two-run home run in the third to double the lead.
 
In the fourth, Young hit a three-run home run and JT Smith was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded as Sophia Livers scored.
 
The Lions scored five in the fifth to extend the game. Emmie Miehe (Cameron Park, Calif.) had an RBI base hit to plate Charli Anger (Lubbock – Cooper), Emma Rodrigues (Little Elm – John Paul II) hit a sacrifice fly to score Jaylin Olguin (Fontana, Calif.), who came in as a pinch runner for Hailey Montemayor (Lubbock – Monterrey).
 
A single up the middle by KK Cosek (Helendale, Calif.) scored Kay Olguin (Fontana, Calif.), who came in to run for Layni Kimura (Westminster, Calif.). Isabella Arzola (Chino, Calif.) plated both Miehe and Cosek with a two-run double down the left field line.
 
The Demons added a pair of runs in the fifth with an RBI triple from Young and she scored on a sacrifice fly by Brynn Daniel. Northwestern State had the run-rule clinching run at second with no outs in the sixth. A fly out, an out at the plate, and a fly out got the game into the seventh by the Lions.
 
Tatum Wright (Frisco – Centennial) hit a two-run double to left center in the top of the seventh as Cosek and Arzola came around to score.
 
Both Cosek and Arzola had multi-hit games for the Lions, while Young went 4 for 4 with six RBIs and four runs scored for the Demons.
 
The Lions used three pitchers in the game with Victoria Masters (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) getting the loss as she was charged with six earned runs in 2.1 innings.
 
Mattison Buster started the game in the circle for the Demons and got the win, tossing all seven innings and allowing four earned runs. Erin Kirkland did not register an out in the fifth, while allowing two earned runs before Buster re-entered the game.
 
GAME 2: NORTHWESTERN STATE 12, EAST TEXAS A&M 2 (Five Innings)
The Demons had the bases loaded in the first and they were cleared via a three-run double to right center by Daniel.
 
Wright notched her ninth home run of the season in the third and it was a two-run shot as Arzola scored on the trot by Wright. The fly ball initially hit the glove of a Demon outfielder, but it bounced off the glove and over the fence.
 
Smith cleared the bases once again for the Demons in the third with a three-run double. In the fourth, Makynlie Jones scored on a wild pitch, Aly Delafield hit a solo home run, Arnold hit a two-run double, Smith reached on a fielder's choice as Arnold scored, while Abby Hollingsworth also reached on a fielder's choice with a run scoring.
 
Wright had two hits in the game for the Lions. Madison Kloepper (Llano) took the loss for the Lions, being charged with eight earned runs in three innings. Brooklyn Stohler got the win for the Demons, allowing two earned runs in four innings.
 
The Lions have lost six in a row and fall to 6-30 overall and 1-10 in Southland Conference play, while the Demons improve to 16-18 overall, 6-5 in SLC action this season, and 6-5 against the Lions all-time.

The series closes out in Natchitoches at noon on Saturday.
