COMMERCE – On a day filled with inclement weather, the East Texas A&M University softball team fell 10-1 in five innings to end the conference-opening series to Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday afternoon at the John Cain Family Softball Complex.
The start of Saturday's game was delayed nearly two hours and then another one-hour 33-minute weather delay followed after the first out of the game was recorded.
Southeastern, who has won the last two Southland Conference Tournaments and reached the NCAA Regional Finals in each of those years, went 3-0 in the first conference series of the year and is 18-9 on the year. East Texas A&M falls to 5-21 overall and starts 0-3 in conference play.
In the first inning after the weather stoppage, Brilee Ford drew a bases-loaded walk. Kaylie Dixon hit a two-run single in the third and then Ford drove in a run in the fourth on a base hit.
Six runs came around to score for Southeastern in the fifth. Shelby Morris hit an RBI triple. Chloe Magee drove in Morris on an RBI single and she scored on a wild pitch. Blair Walsh plated two on a double, while Dixon reached on a fielding error as Ka'Lyn Watson scored on the play.
The lone run for East Texas A&M came in the bottom of the fifth.
Kay Olguin (Fontana, Calif.) drew a lead-off walk, advanced to second a wild pitch, moved to third on a ground out by
Emmie Miehe (Cameron Park, Calif.) and then scored on an RBI single by
Layni Kimura (Westminster, Calif.).
East Texas A&M was held to just two hits with one coming from Kimura in the fifth and
Isabella Arzola (Chino, Calif.) recorded an infield base hit in the bottom of the first.
Maddie Muller (Frisco – Memorial) gave up four earned runs in four innings for the loss, while SLU's Haley Crawford tossed four shutout innings for the win.
UP NEXT
East Texas A&M heads down to Austin on Wednesday at 6 p.m. to face defending national champion Texas. Southland play resumes Friday at A&M-Corpus Christi.
