Wilcox, Wright homer, but Cardinals walk-off over Lion Softball

SAN ANTONIO – Three runs in the bottom of the sixth led way to the University of Incarnate Word walking-off over the East Texas A&M University softball team on Wednesday afternoon for an 11-3 win at H-E-B Field.
 
The Cardinals plated five runs in the first as Jaisy Caceres had a one-run single, Erin Perez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Madison Dorrow drew a bases-loaded walk, Prisas Quintero reached on a fielder's choice, while Ayla Gonzales hit an RBI base hit.
 
The first run of the day for the Lions came in the second as Aaliyah Wilcox (Covington, Ga.) homered to left, her third of the season. KK Cosek (Helendale, Calif.) added another run for the Lions in the third with a sacrifice fly as Jaylin Olguin (Fontana, Calif.) came around to score.
 
In the third, Victoria Altamirano hit an infield RBI single, while two runs came around to score on a base hit by Quintero in the fourth.
 
Tatum Wright (Frisco – Centennial) hit her 13th home run of the season in the top of the sixth, it was a solo shot to left center.
 
The Cardinals loaded the bases with an out in the sixth needing three runs for the run-rule win. Gonzales hit an RBI single, Altamirano hit a sacrifice fly to right, and Bryanna Fuentes drove in the game-winning run with a double to right.
 
Zoey Hipolito (Ontario, Calif.) went 2 for 2 in the game for the Lions. Maddie Muller (Frisco – Memorial) was charged with five earned runs without an out registered in the bottom of the first for the loss.
 
Sam Portillo tossed three innings for the win, allowing two earned runs.
 
The Lions have lost 16 in a row to fall to 6-40 overall and 1-20 in Southland Conference play, while the Cardinals are now 30-15 overall and 15-6 in Southland action.
 
UP NEXT
East Texas A&M plays its final seven games of the regular season at home beginning with a series against HCU this weekend. Friday's doubleheader is set for a 5 p.m. start.
